I think that if anything were to happen, Nintendo would probably be a lot more hands-on with it, and that any resemblance to the original movie would be as much as the original movie resembled the games...

It was the wife of co-creator Takashi Tezuka (producer on NSMB2 and NSMBU, btw), who is normally very shy, but got really angry at him one time for coming home from work so late.

The originals have just had longer to gestate and burn into the public consciousness. Having a multimedia blitz of cartoons and comics at the time sure couldn't have hurt, either. I thought the ones you described were usually at Hot Topic, though. The ones I've seen at Walmart, like that new group shot drawn in the old style (which I really want) are good.

I don't know, I think a lot of those shirts can be pretty crappy, too.

I think the final stage and ending of Super Mario Galaxy balanced out some of the sillier elements.

And if memory serves, the Bee Suit seemed to elevate Mario by lifting him from his back-- more realistic than most cartoons do it, I'd wager.
