SUBMISSIONS WANTED--Upcoming Editorial Article

Hey folks. Since our recent post on March 21 about Super Mario Bros. showing up in the Best Buy ad, I've been thinking: Exactly how popular IS the Super Mario Bros. movie? Well, that's what I want to find out. This site has been saying it's a cult classic for years, and it's time to show everyone th...

Re: Super Mario Bros. Comic

Pretty cool!

I really like the art style for this one. Also makes you realize how the idea of a "goomba" exactly from the games wouldn't really work in this film.

All right--got my full impressions on the video: Your setup for the segment was perfect--the "clean slate" approach. It's definitely the best thing to do when trying to discuss the film with anyone that's just heard that it's bad without any context. So glad you gave props to David L. Snyd...

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW--Robert Rothbard (Production Manager)

We've got an exclusive, unannounced interview with Robert Rothbard--the film's uncredited production manager. Lots of great info here on the production side of things, including some locations that were being considered for use in the film prior to the selection of the cement factory.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Review

That's what I mean: Hopper wasn't as hammy as he usually is. :P You know, you're right. Unlike something like Waterworld , Hopper's performance as Koopa really is more restrained than some of his other roles. IMO I think that makes the character all the more interesting. Still, I think there are so...

Even the 1990s Captain America film gets an extended director's cut/re-release!?

You're totally right that this being done at an opportune time related to the new Captain America movie. Such a shame for SMB to be ignored--when all the signs are there for a better version.

This is a great post, Redstar. Mario Party is one of those niche Mario franchises that largely gets overlooked. Honestly, I'd probably play any of the MP games over the sports ones. Re: Would you want Hoskins back as Mario if the chance came?

IMO, having a new SMB movie with "hip" stars would completely ruin it for me. Since I'm so attached to the movie we have I can't really see anyone else in the roles. But if a new film was made, and the casting was as inspired as the original and it was "story first," I could *pro...

The "Isolated Score" Thread

Okay, so I was listening to Alan Silvestri's wonderful score soundtrack to the film, and I started noticing some inconsistencies between some of the tracks and how they're presented in the film. I also found Page 18 curious: "Hey, Bertha, remember me?" Mario asked. Soon he had Bertha talking and laughing. She never even noticed when he carefully stole the crystal." That's totally not Bertha's character, though it could be from an early, early take in the same mold as the odd...

I love, love, love Captain Lou's Mario voice. It 100% encapsulates that "Mario Mania" era of the character just as good as the games themselves. It's a Brooklyn-style voice but also humble, heroic, and upbeat all at the same time. Absolutely perfect.
