19th Anniversary Theatrical Screening Events

We at the Archive are proud to finally share what we've been working towards the last few months: the film's first true theatrical print screening events! We have worked with the esteemed Landmark theatres and Thalian Hall to book the film in several locations around the country, including New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Seattle, WA and Wilmington, NC.

This will be the first time the movie has been seen in theaters since it's original 1993 premiere, so we're planning these events to be well-remembered. Former cast/crew are scheduled to attend to both watch the film and speak on their contributions while production memorabilia held in storage for nearly 20 years will be displayed.

Yes, you read that right. As this is the last year before the film's 20th anniversary we've decided to demonstrate once and for all that it has a dedicated cult following in the strongest way possible: screening it in theaters across the country. These locations include:

The Sunshine Cinema in New York City on April 27th and 28th

The NuArt Theatre in Los Angeles on May 25th

The Thalian Hall in Wilmington, NC on June 21

The Egyptian Theatre in Seattle, WA on June 22nd and 23rd

The Inwood Theatre in Dallas, Texas on August 3rd and 4th

The Esquire Theatre in Denver, Colorado on October 5th and 6th

Our first screenings will be on April 27 and 28 at the Sunshine Cinema in New York City. Both screenings are being held at midnight and will feature special guest speaker Michael Criscuolo, who will be available to answer a few questions following the end of the film. Tickets are only $10 and can be pre-ordered online HERE (27th) and HERE (28th).

Can you really get away with this? I thought you had to own the rights to screen it in theatres.

We're renting it straight from Disney, so no problems there. They have a whole department that facilitates screenings of their back catalog.

This is a very exciting prospect. It's what we've been pushing towards for years now. It's taken Phlibbit and I a lot of work to reach this point, but it's finally happening. As fans we should be proud to see the film back in theaters. I hope that all our members on the West Coast or that know someone in the L.A. area can attend the screening.

Not a bad idea. That'd be a good way to get everyone pumped.

We do hope that you'll join us. We've all supported this movie and been a part of its community since 2007, so this screening is the culmination of all our hard work and passion. We need to enjoy it together.

Wish one would make it close enough to me, but with where I am, it would probably be a pretty long drive in any direction. Would love to see this on the big screen one more time...

The closest screening to you that we have planned for this year would be in Wilmington, NC, but even that would be an 8-hour drive.

There really shouldn't be any difficulty in setting up screenings nationwide, but there simply has to be enough local demand to guarantee attendance.

I think you all need to do lots of local advertisement for any Wilmington, North Carolina screenings. The movie was filmed there, so I think it would be great to get as many people to go as possible.

Contact local news stations and websites to spread the word when the time comes. I think that if that event is successful and gets some press online, Disney will begin to notice that the movie does have a cult following. They're all about money.

So, if they see that a movie screening 20 years later sold a decent amount of tickets, that's money that they could make with a re-release. Muahaha... :wink:

We wanted to hit the key major cities of the nation, so we unfortunately had to exclude a lot of places where we just weren't sure we could muster up enough support. If these screenings go well and we can network with locals we'll definitely expand next year.

Could you perhaps make the 27th (Friday night)? That's when our guest speaker will be coming in while LBD_Nytetrayn will be traveling down from Canada to host. We would love to have you there if at all possible, but we understand if you can't make it.

We've heard back from Michael Criscuolo. He said that about 40 - 50 people came for their showing on Friday and that he was able to share a few thoughts on the film before it screened. No one talked to him or Shawn afterwards, but it was late and people were tired.

Shawn was able to film the event, so we should be able to edit the footage and get that up onto Youtube/the site within a few weeks.

We had an amazing time at last night's screening! We filled nearly 190 seats of 300 with 157 paid tickets and around 30 additional special guests from the production, including David L. Snyder, Dana Kaminski, Brian Jennings and Parker Bennett. That's more than half the seats!

Ryan flew in from North Carolina just for the night and was a great help in co-hosting the event. We have both photos and footage, which will be showcased on the site as editing allows.

Is the screening for Wilmington, NC still on for June 21? I might be able to make that one if I have time to make a road trip down. I live in MA so I imagine it would be a good 10 hour drive haha.

The Wilmington screening is certainly still on and you're welcome to join if you feel that drive is worth it. We should have Jeff Goodwin, Mark McCoy and many other East Coast-based members of the production attending. Keep checking back for details as they come.

Wow! That's fantastic. Maybe send a report to Disney about the success of it (And the positive comments from David L.Snyder and others involved would help too). When Summer of Sonic started, SEGA were intrigued but it was mostly fulfilled by fans, and SEGA have grown to appreciate and support the show as much as possible in recent years due to dedication. If we can do it with that, maybe you can do the same for Super Mario Bros. The Movie.

Honestly wished I could have been there, but LA is a little far for me. I will try and save for next year if you should hold a screening. Be nice to travel and meet you guys. I am very impressed and happy for you guys! I hope you continue to garner success for this amazing event ^_^

It would be wonderful if you were able to fly in for next year, especially since we're planning on booking Leguizamo and others, but we'll also have to look into international screenings. We'll just have to see what happens.

That. Would. Be. Epic. Like seriously epic. I will definitely try and make the effort, anything to support fellow fans and a recut version of the movie. Sometimes numbers can go a long way, and numbers of people viewing such an old movie in such a positive way can go a long way to making that happen.

You guys seem to have done such a huge amount of work. If you need support in the UK, even just to try and grab a feel of numbers for possible numbers here (Though I completely understand that national screenings are hard enough, let alone international), just let me know mate

Hmm, best not plan for this year. July this year holds the London Olympics, and before that we have Summer of Sonic. July will be a wee bit busy this year. But next year the calendar should be more open. It's those darned Olympics that will hike up travel costs, hotel costs and decrease the quality of travel (London is jam-packed like sardines on a normal day - it'll be suicide-alley during the Olympics)

Just saw the new photos put up from the LA Screening, it looks like it was such a great time!!! Loved all the pictures of the memorabilia and the cast/crew, im glad it was such a huge success. I hope the Wilmington screening goes just as well. Will there be stuff on display there too?

Yes--the plan for Wilmington is to put some prop stuff on display. We'll have some of the things we had in LA, but we'll also have a few new things as well

I went to the screening in Seattle last saturday, and I had an amazing time seeing the actual print in digital sound, it looked incredible, cept for a couple blurry parts here and there but nothing to take me out of the experience. there wasn't as many people there as I had hoped but I think that will grow in time, I can't wait for the 20th Anniversary screenings, I'll be there with my Devo Gun!. Maybe even dressed as Mario if there is enough interest lol

These 19th anniversary screenings have been such a hit this summer that we're thrilled to announce that they are going to continue into the fall:
