19th Anniversary Theatrical Screening Events

Why hello there everyone. I have quite a few suggestions about Theatres in Australia if the SMB Movie Archives peeps would be considering to play this movie in Australia next year for the 20th anniversary.

I have so far found these locations out of all of the main capitol cities in Australia (excluding Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, which I have not found any cinemas yet but I will still keep an eye out for suggestions).

Thanks for the suggestions! While we don't currently have any plans to show the film in Australia, who knows what we might be able to put together for the 20th next year. We'll be sure to look into the country as a location, so stick around until then!

If this comes back to New York next year for the big two-oh, I'd be more than happy to give a presentation in front of a crowd. I have a lot to say about this movie. A lot that needs to be heard. People don't just owe this movie respect, they owe it awe.

It's so cool to see this movie making a well deserved comeback. There truly is still a dedicated fan base nearly 20 years after the film's initial release, and I am glad to be a part of it! I would attend all of the screenings if I could, but I have never been in the area of any of the screenings. Bring Super Mario Bros. to Minnesota, and I will be there!

This screening really seemed like a grand finale with all of the props and staff from the movie. I really wish I could have gone. It would have been a really great time. I don't know if any of you know them, but I watch this family on YouTube called the "SHAYTARDS". The name was a fluke and isn't meant to be offensive in anyway. They are really great, funny, weird, nice, inspirational people. They live in L.A. They do daily vlogs, and in the comments I repeatedly asked them to go to the showing and video a little bit of what the experience was like....and they didn't. Haha

Any way you could have a screening in Salt Lake City? It's only 9 hour drive from Colorado... I would tell everyone I knew to go. And me and my Fiancee would go for sure.

I saw Labyrinth at Century 16 (Cinemark) in SLC a few years back in 35mm print... maybe they would be willing?

Here's the thing with additional showings: we can ask, but it might not happen. We've been lucky to work with a theater chain that isn't charging us; they're running the film as part of their regular lineup. We might not be so lucky in requesting additional locations.

That being said, renting the film's print for just one night costs about $300. A small group can easily cover that between their selves. If anyone wants to see the film that badly in their location they can talk to us privately and we'd be happy to promote the event. Beyond that, we're just lucky to have had the reach that we have.

did you ever email those theaters? Century and Megaplex have both done deals with 35mm prints in the past... surely you can see if something can be worked out.

When me and my fiancee saw Labyrinth, there was maybe 20 people in attendance. And the theater had a print for that one... a whole summer of 35mm midnight films...

and coincidentally the SHIPPING ALONE for celluloid is something around 250-300 bucks. the studio typically asks for a percentage of the gross, which is all up to the theater at the end of the night. if you guys are NOT shipping it through certified methods (ie: the studio) and just carrying the print with you, it shouldn't be 300 bucks per screening because then each theater would have to request shipment and ship it back for each screening. The studio itself, like each individual theater, just needs it to be official and wants to get paid - you're already going through official channels to get the print. Eliminate the shipping charge and carry the print with you in cans along with official permission and I'm sure the theater would consider working with you

It was $350 to rent the print for a single showing. We did not have to pay this fee through the Landmark screenings, but did for the Cinematique showing in Wilmington. Typically it has to do with whether Disney is making a percentage or not through ticket sales.

Would the company you go through have prints available in the UK?

I can't say if they do, but it's Disney. I'm sure there would be a way to work it out.

EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED A SCREENING

We are looking for photographs and video footage from each of the events. 2012's Los Angeles and New York screenings have some information (Los Angeles is particularly well covered) but all other events are lacking considerable amounts of detail and information. Not being a US Resident, it is hard for me to attend events and as such I have no information of my own to add.

There is a new Screenings Page added to our Special Features section which catalogues the extent the Super Mario Bros Movie community has gone to in bringing fans together for real life events. It's well worth checking out, and when more information is brought to me I can make it even more complete.

This post is nearly a year late, but we thought we would share some of the artwork done for this screening. Witney Seibold, who works at the NuArt, does some amazingly fun sketches for each film that they screen. He drew a flier and a daybill, which can be seen below.
