We are saddened to announce that Super Mario Bros. producer Jake Eberts has passed away today at the age of 71.

Site staff Steven Applebaum had personally spoken to him over the phone some time ago. The two were in discussions to shoot an interview on his role for an upcoming making-of documentary on the film.

This opportunity will not come to pass. He will be sorely missed among the community. We wish his family, friends and colleagues the best.

Having spoken to him over the phone this only makes all the more personal. I felt as if I knew him on some level, albeit only briefly. Ryan and I were thrilled that he was happy to be interviewed for a making-of documentary project on the film, which can no longer happen.

Now that he's gone it's just a tremendous blow. I feel really broken up about it. I can only imagine what his friends and family are feeling. So directionless...

Well that's terrible. I would love to have seen this interview he was gonna do. And this making of for the movie, I would love to see that as well.

What a sad thing to hear. My thoughts go out to those close to him. It's a real bummer that he wasn't able to do that interview. It would have been great to get an interview from a producer's prospective. RIP Jake Eberts and thank you for all that you have done for this film.

Roland Joffé, the producer who worked alongside Eberts, is still alive and may be interested in being interviewed. We just need to wait an appropriate amount of time before re-approaching him. It's a shame that we won't get the both of them, but these things happen. It only further demonstrates the need for our work to be done.
