UPCOMING INTERVIEW--Hank Carlson (Yoshi engineer)

Postby Phlibbit » Sat Sep 04, 2010 12:12 am

Time for another round of interview questions to get from you guys! As Hank and Guy worked in similar departments on similar projects we've decided to allow questions for both of them at the same time. This should save time and let you all come up with more questions by considering their individual roles compared to each other.

This interview is with Hank Carlson--who was involved in the development of Yoshi. He built the top and bottom halves of Yoshi's head as well as all the tongues, worked out the extending tongue, and painted a total of five heads.

This is an E-mail correspondence so try to word your questions as clearly as you can! So, get to asking those questions!

wow, this is exciting!! Here is a question I have.

Since Jurassic Park was coming out the same year as Super Mario Bros, was there any connection or comparison between the Yoshi made for the movie and the dinosaurs made for Jurassic Park?

Also, were there any deleted scenes that involved Yoshi? Or was all of his footage included in the final cut of the film?

Unfortunately, Hank never went on-set and stayed behind at the shop so he may not be aware of any deleted footage.

Did he do any work on the T-rex at the film's climax? If so, tell us a little about it!

No, Rob Burman was responsible for the stages of Koopa's de-evolution at the end of the film.

However, if you want answers to your questions, be sure to keep checking the forums...

Did you know that Yoshi was inspired from the video game character of the same name?
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

I took some scans today of an appropriate segment of the Japanese movie program pertaining to the development of the Goombas, Yoshi, and other creatures. Perhaps you guys will find them enlightening:

Just a note, but Hank is currently working on a movie so actually won't get back to us for awhile. So you guys can keep submitting questions until otherwise told. :)
