Golden "Look-Look" Book Discussion

Since this has been uploaded, I thought it would be good to have a thread for this particularly interesting piece of merchandise.

This page is interesting because it shows what could be a deleted scene. You can see parts from this in motion in one of the trailers ("Get me the rock!").

Here's the outside of the Koopahari Desert Tunnel set--looks like an in-construction shot to me.

Yeah, that track suit Spike is wearing is particularly interesting. It's difficult to know exactly when that scene might have occurred in the film, so it seems most likely that it was an alternate take rather than simply a new or extended scene.

I also found Page 18 curious: "Hey, Bertha, remember me?" Mario asked. Soon he had Bertha talking and laughing. She never even noticed when he carefully stole the crystal." That's totally not Bertha's character, though it could be from an early, early take in the same mold as the odd way in which Francesca evoked her lines in the "Bad Influence" video.

I thought that was interesting too, but I just figured that little part was re-written in order to condense the story. However, I've been wrong before...

The movie does not translate into a children's book very well.

Personally, I've never thought of the movie as being a "kid's movie." I've always thought of it being more for the 13-24 demographic, due to its darker, cyberpunk tone. I read a Golden "Look-Look" book based on Disney's "The Black Hole" once, and I made the mistake of reading that before I saw the movie and the movie is definitely NOT for children, especially considering the ending...

The Super Mario Bros. movie on the other hand, tries to be two things at once-- on the one hand it tries to be G-rated family fun material, but on the other, more prominent hand, it tries to be a sci-fi adventure. This Golden Look-Look Book seems kind of inappropriate, if you ask me. I mean, I think it's the only children's book in existence that has a picture of John Leguizamo without a shirt on and mentions the word "nightclub."
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
