The movie does not translate into a children's book very well.
Personally, I've never thought of the movie as being a "kid's movie." I've always thought of it being more for the 13-24 demographic, due to its darker, cyberpunk tone. I read a Golden "Look-Look" book based on Disney's "The Black Hole" once, and I made the mistake of reading that before I saw the movie and the movie is definitely NOT for children, especially considering the ending...
The Super Mario Bros. movie on the other hand, tries to be two things at once-- on the one hand it tries to be G-rated family fun material, but on the other, more prominent hand, it tries to be a sci-fi adventure. This Golden Look-Look Book seems kind of inappropriate, if you ask me. I mean, I think it's the only children's book in existence that has a picture of John Leguizamo without a shirt on and mentions the word "nightclub."
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
