Super Mario Noir (A Concept)

Postby 1upmushroom » Sun Aug 28, 2011 9:25 pm

Now first keep in mind, this is a concept. No movie plans, no game plans, no fan fiction, nothing but a concept. Anyone can take it, just give me credit for concepting it.

Anyway, this concept Super Mario Noir was something I've been thinking for a while now. And if you're a big Marvel fan, you would know this is inspired by their Marvel Noir comics run that happened at least 2 years ago. It's basically Mario but with a Noir twist to it.

Name: Super Mario Noir.
Genre: Action/Adventure.
Rating: T.
Console: Wii/WiiU/3DS.

Now in this concept I made it's not hardcore Noir, there's not a lot of violence, nothing like that. It's not a total reimagining, it's the same premise.

Bowser, has taken the Princess and Mario has to save her. Simple. In my concept it would be a videogame. The gameplay would be like the new 3DS Mario game. The main enemies are Koopa Troopas and Goombas. The main item would be a fire flower. But because it has a Noir twist, they're operated like Tommy Guns. The Mushrooms would make Mario stronger and and be able to take out more enemies at a time.

Like the old games, there will be plenty of bosses, but instead of Bowser's kids and just clones of himself, these are old friends Mario has encountered before.

Here's a list.

Boss 1: Donkey Kong.

Boss 2: Wario.

Boss 3: Petey Pirhana.

Boss 4: The Hammer Brothers.

Boss 5: Bloober.

Boss 6: Queen Shroob.

Boss 7: Luigi/Mr. L.

Boss 8: Wart.

Boss 9: The Seven Koopa Kids.

Boss 10: Bowser Junior.

Boss 11: Bowser.

Those are the bosses. Here are the enemies.

1. Goombas.
2. Koopa Troopas.
3. Shy Guys.
4. Snifits.
5. Bloobers.
6. Shroobs.
7. Pirhanna Plants.
8. Cobrats.
9. Lakitus.
10. Spiny Koopas.

Here are the items.

1. Mushrooms.
2. Fire Flowers.
3. Bob-Ombs.
4. Hammers.
5. Barrels.
6. Snifit Mask.

Here are the worlds. Each world has 7 levels each.

World 1: A Construction Site.
World 2: Wario's Warehouse.
World 3: The Jungle.
World 4: Bowser's Base #1.
World 5: The Ocean.
World 6: The Church of the Shroobs.
World 7: Bowser's Base #2.
World 8: Subcon.
World 9: Bowser's Base #3.
World 10: Bowser Junior's Castle.
World 11: Bowser's Castle.

Here are some allies.

1. Luigi/Mr. L.
2. Toad.
3. Yoshi.
4. E. Gadd.

The game will also feature voice acting from familiar talents.

Walker Boone: Mario, Hammer Brother 1, Morton.

Harvey Atkin: Bowser.

Jim Cummings: Wario, Wart, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Brother 2.

Danny Wells: Luigi/Mr. L, Koopa Troopas.

Christopher Lloyd: E. Gadd.

Fisher Stevens: Iggy.

John Stocker: Toad, Shy Guys, Koopa Troopas.

(More will be added.)

Now of course, due to it's more edgy nature, I don't expect this to be heavily praised. I actually expect it to be panned. But it's still a concept, it was never intended to go anywhere. Nintendo would surely never touch it due to it's darker tone, but then again I want people to see my ideas and review on them. That's all for now.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

Just be sure to tell us--or show us--why it's noir. Part of the problem with the "darker and edgier" premise in any media is, it's never made entirely believable.

If you can make us believe that these characters would behave in this way, you'll succeed.

Well it would be revealed that unlike the previous times Peach has been kidnapped, it turns out Bowser hid her successfully without any leads. Mario had left the kingdom has searched for Peach for about 2 years. He finally got a lead to where Bowser was and that's when the game began. During all these Mario's gotten meaner and more obessed because he spent years looking for her and got leads that lead to nowhere. Finally he meets up with Bowser but in a twist it's revealed Bowser killed the Princess 2 years ago, right after he kidnapped her.

However to keep Mario from destroying his army, Bowser created a lie, a con to decieve Mario so he could dictate the kingdom. Bowser basically said he hid the princess somewhere he wouldn't tell Mario. And for 2 years, the plan worked however once Mario actually found the castle Bowser panicked and basically threw everything at Mario to kill him. Then Mario found out the truth and realized he's been searching for nothing and that plus the fact that he never got to admitt his love to Peach seriously made him mad.

After a huge battle Mario got an axe and cut the bridge however that was when he realized that THAT Bowser, the one he fought with was a minion in disguise. It turns out Bowser right after he revealed his true plans and a decoy immediately took his place. Mario just stood there in the castle ruins, and after a while walked away into the empty world as an empty man.

And that was basically the plot for Super Mario Noir.

Like Prime Evil, I'd like to see it said or shown what actually makes this concept "noir." You've described some basic details behind a plot, but nothing really thematic or atmospheric to suggest that the concept is in any way noir. Like "darker and edgier," it's not a label that can just be prescribed.

"Noir" to me implies a very high standard of cinema-- movies like "Casablanca," or even "Citizen Kane," I'd even go so far as to call Alfred Hitchcock's original "Psycho" a "noir film," even "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" has elements of the remnants of noir in it, but itself is not noir. A "Super Mario Bros." noir concept is interesting, but you'd be better off writing your own noir concept with original characters and settings. Try writing a bizarro noir! That could be pretty fun.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

I think the idea in general is meant to be prescribed. Think about it, its just Mario with noir. Which is fine because everything Mario has ever done outside of his normal universe has been a prescribed label. Hey its a me Mario! and now I've got go-carts, and then we're gonna have a party and after that we're gonna play a round of golf and if we're lucky we'll get some soccer in before the day is done, did I mention I was a doctor once?

As far as the atmospheric ideas it could use more tho, such as different ways of saying the same old Mario things. Perhaps Bowser's Castle becomes Bowser's Hideout? I always liked that in Mario RPG (another prescribed idea) it was known as Bowsers Keep not just his castle.

That's actually a really good point. Mario's also been a carpenter, a painter and on occasion he's actually a plumber. All prescribed labels. So what would be bad about a game where Mario is a detective in a noir-like setting?

And, to top it all off, Mario is a hero. In noir, there generally are no heroes.
