Hehe. Yeah, I read about this on Kotaku. I can see PETA's point when it comes to an issue like this, but they're clearly only targeting Super Mario due to its popularity. There's many other video game properties with far more realistic and sinister depictions of interactions with animals. As it stands, they're just trolls on a forum asserting that catching Pokemon is "slavery."
On the other hand, their Flash game isn't half-bad:

There's a Mario-type game where you play as a cute chick (a literal one) in a red Mario cap, and you must battle robotic Goombas with Col. Sanders-looking faces (Mario's out with a sprained wrist he sustained while playing video games, apparently). Along the way, there are death traps based on the fried-chicken-making process.
Gahhhhh...the stupidity burns.

According to an article from Nintendo Life, the Flash game was a "tongue-in-cheek" joke.

It's still very hurtful to draw attention in such a cold manner, it's a very
nasty 'joke' if I may say so myself! If I were drawing attention to tanukis being skinned alive then I personally would do so
without attacking something as beloved and popular as Super Mario.
Even my
mom was rather displeased about PETA's 'campaign', she thinks they were wasting their time by doing so when hundreds of kids are starving in the world - so to help cheer me up and deal with this she bought me a beautiful gold snake bracelet studded with emeralds. Yes I requested
gold jewellery as a subtle reference to the good ol' gold coins - but indeed a snake is very appropriate, wouldn't the Cobrat and/or Tryclyde fans among you agree?
I have also enjoyed a few rounds on Super Mario Bros. 3 (in which the Tanooki suit debuted), and yes when possible I equipped the Tanooki suit - but unfortunately I died once or twice and lost the suit shortly after
Mom has also happily agreed to another 'Super' request of mine: she will find time for us to sit and watch the Super Mario Bros. movie! So when she next takes me shopping I will indeed look for some chocolate coins in gold foil, and also both classic Dairy Milk (remember mom used this to make the towering bricks on my Super Mario Bros. birthday cake) and Dairy Milk with Caramel, for us to eat while we watch the movie. Coconut mushrooms are out since I don't like coconuts, but if I find any more Super Mario-themed confectionery (other than my Super Mario Advent calendar) I will buy those as well.
I'll let y'all know when we watch the movie

Why should I be suspicious about it...?
I still feel some jokes like this can be pretty cruel...

Really. Because my spidey sense says PETA realized what the flying hell they just did, (that or they didn't like the negative attention) and claimed it was a joke. Also I would perfer you not call them freaks. They.re just trying protect animals from abuse, and death.

Kotaku just did a
defense of PETA's statements which I fully agree with. Yes, PETA generally goes about things in completely inappropriate and counterproductive ways, but you have to admit that their overall message is admirable. It's a shame that despite tanookis being so iconic to the Super Mario series most people are still completely unaware of their existence, yet alone their abuse in their native land.

Unfortunately, it isn't half-good, either. ;P

I should really draw a pic of mario gutting up a raccoon and wearing the suit in a very gory manner. We can all send it to peta.

It's hard to take PETA seriously when all they do is use scare tactics against children and others. They're eco terrorists in my book like the folks who burn down buildings and raid animal cages.

I was under the impression that PETA stood for "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals." In which case, I've been a member for years.

Oh, haven't we all?

I have no issue with respecting animals and treating them well before their consumption, but I also feel that it's the natural order of things for humans to be omnivores. It's okay for us to eat meat from time-to-time.

Don't let Princess Daisy hear you say that (remember in the movie she's a vegetarian)! LOL I couldn't resist

It's been a year and I am STILL laughing about this.
I've got a million and one problems with PETA, but I would love to meet the person who's responsible for drawing up their images like that Bloodied Tanooki Mario. Cracks me the eff UP.

Indeed. After all, if you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!

I didn't think the PETA thing was funny - and neither did my mom (don't forget she too is a Mario fan). Both of us were pretty shocked, and when I told mom PETA had revealed it was all a joke she was like, "Do you see me laughing (?)"
And yes I know it's okay to eat meat from time to time, but with this being a fansite for the Super Mario Bros. movie I only felt right about making the comment about Princess Daisy LOL

Aww, sorry you and your mom didn't see the humor in it! D: I tend to have a, um, questionable sense of humor, so yah, ahahaha.
Either way, vegetarians can eat whatever they like! That is totes cool with me! But I love me mah meat. :B
