The "Why Waluigi is Terrible" Thread
MODERATOR'S NOTICE: This topic was created from discussions split from the "Mario Party Series" thread.
I stopped playing the "Mario Party" games after "Mario Party 2." I had "Mario Party 3" for awhile, but I traded it in as I hated it so much, particularly because of the inclusion of the 'character' of Waluigi-- I don't even consider Waluigi a real Mario character. I might have played "4" on the GameCube, but it was so long ago I don't really remember much.

Like I said above, I bought Mario Party 3 and played it a total of 1 1/2 rounds. I just could not get into it because they changes the mechanics and feel of the game from Mario Party 2 so much. If they had made these changes more gradually I might not have cared so much, but as it stands it really feels like they just knew 3 was going to be the last entry for the N64 (or for the series entirely) and they wanted to push everything they could change.
I don't mind Waluigi, but I do feel that they could have chosen someone better for the game.

Then shun me, because Waluigi is awesome. He exhibits a ton of humor and character, especially in stuff like Mario Strikers Charged and the intros to Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour and Mario Power Tennis. After Mario, he's one of my favorites to play as.
I was even just saying last night that while playing Fortune Street is fun, playing as Waluigi is even more fun-- particularly when you really play as him, and do all the little comments and such.
Wario is great and all, but Waluigi really completes him-- he is the Beavis to Wario's Butt-head.

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Waluigi is just a fun character well-suited for the spin-off games, though the fact that he came out of nowhere and wasn't well characterized initially definitely held him back for awhile. It took them a while to grow Waluigi into a character worth playing.

That actually sounds really fun. Wario and Waluigi just need the right premise to work a game around and you've both outlined something that could work.

Re: Mario Party Series
A game with solely Wario is fine. But Waluigi is such an uninspired, horribly thought out character that Shigeru Miyamoto probably came up with during a bad 'shroom trip-- I can tell he's an old hippy and he's been around. That's why I don't hold a character as stupid as Waluigi against the master of the digital world.
But still, I hate Waluigi with a passion. And to paraphrase Scrooge: "If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about praising Waluigi would be boiled with his own pudding and stuffed with his own turkey." Humbug!

You worked with what you could in 1985, as graphics were limited. By 2000 there was no excuse, no freaking excuse whatsoever. Furthermore, Waluigi is never explicitly said to be Wario's brother, but rather just some oddball who follows Wario around. I don't think even Wario likes Waluigi because Waluigi is just some crazy person who dresses similar to him and keeps his facial hair in a familiar style. Even the symbol on Waluigi's hat is uninspired. An upside-down "L?" Isn't that the Greek symbol for woman? So Waluigi is a transvestite? I'm starting to think so.

And do you hate Boshi/Washi this much?

Never claimed them to be; Martinet doesn't think they are: "I don’t actually know if they’re brothers or not. I don’t think so… I think they’re just two nice, evil guys who found each other."

Don't try to make me look like a fool, an upside-down "M" is a "W" -- it represents Wario. An upside-down "L" isn't anything. It represents the emptiness I feel when I look at the soulless eyes of an idiotic character like Waluigi.

Which, as I said, is convenient. "Warui" meaning "bad" in Japanese, and "Wario" basically being a pun name meaning "bad Mario," just as "Waluigi" is "bad Luigi" and "Washi" is "bad Yoshi." Those just don't translate as well outside of their native tongue, whereas anyone else can just think all they did for Wario is flip the first letter of Mario's name.
Speaking of which, you still haven't said whether you similarly consider Washi (Boshi in the West) to be such an abomination as well...

I don't even know what Washi/Boshi is. I don't really play video-games, not since 2001-2002, anyway. So that's... ten years ago? I think the last game I played all the way through was "Luigi's Mansion." I don't really care for video-games, which is strange considering my favorite movie is based on one.

Washi/Boshi is from 1996's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, so he's a character introduced before the modern era of the Super Mario series.

I think it's worth noting that in modern Greek, Waluigi's name comes out as "Γουαλουίτζι". The gamma's not entirely without purpose.

That was Croco; this is Boshi/Washi.
Too bad Square Enix probably has the rights to Boshi, somehow... I'd love to see him team with Wario and Waluigi.

Boshi was a fun character for what little he offered to Legend of the Seven Stars. I'd like to see him return and contribute to the overall aesthetic to a game, even if it's just as a recurring side-villain or someone to do side quests for/against.

Re: Mario Party Series
Maybe it's because I haven't played "Legend of the Seven Stars" in about ten years, but I have no recollection of "Boshi." However, as Yoshis are a race and not a singular entity, I can assume there's one bad apple in the bunch. It still doesn't excuse "Waluigi," who has no reason to be-- and don't give me that "Wario needs a partner," crap, Wario was well enough on his own. If they had to make an evil Luigi, they could have given him a more inspired name, like Tuigi-- (A "T" looks like an upside-down L in a way and the name implies a second, two-Uigi.) or Duoigi, implying a second Luigi, or a union with Wario. And his design is all wrong, he doesn't look right and furthermore they would have had to introduce him a long time ago for me to go with it, I'm talking around the time they introduced Wario they would have had to have Tuigi or Duoigi at the same time roughly for me to even buy into such a concept. As it is now is completely unacceptable and unforgivable.

How many of those names would have translated well to Japanese, though? "Wa" is the whole "bad" thing for them, like having a Negaduck here or a Negaverse there or whathaveyou. Either way, one language is going to lose out, and since it comes from Japan, it just happened to be ours.
And even if they did change it-- it wouldn't be the first time-- something tells me that a lot of people probably wouldn't get your ideas much better.
Anyway, I think you might be overreacting a little bit to the whole thing. Sure, you have every right not to like the character, but he's not exactly a crime against humanity, and doesn't even show up in the main games.

LOL
You're one of those people? Scrappy actually saved the show from monotony, unbearable re-runs and constant "guest appearances" from pop culture icons barely anyone our age would recognize. I highly recommend checking out Mark Evanier's "Scrappy Days" series of articles on Scrappy's creation and influence on the show.
I always found Scrappy to be a breath of fresh air on the show. Scooby and Shaggy would try to do their thing (read: run away) but Scrappy would jump in and stop them, forcing them to re-think the situation. For the first time, the show actually had some self-awareness. Scrappy was at least better than Scooby Dum (Scooby's mentally-disabled cousin) or even Flim-Flam.

Yes, I'm one of the 99.9 % of people who loathes Scrappy Doo. He's like Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch-- an attempt to breath life into a dying show. Now, the "Mario" series wasn't dying until Waluigi was introduced-- now there's a cancer in the entire Nintendo library and its name is Waluigi. Notice I didn't refer to Waluigi as "him," but rather as "it," because like Scrappy Doo, it cannot be considered a proper person or character. It can only mark the beginning of the end of an era that was well enough on its own.

LOL, anyway to be honest. YYEEEAH, Waluigi has no purpose in the Mario series, there is no attempt at character development, his voice is annoying, and he's basically another 100 bucks Martinet gets.

Interesting fact, the Spanish Inquisition always gave you a month's notice that they were going to come and 'visit' you. Monty Python's "Nobody ever suspects the Spanish Inquisition" phrase is historically inaccurate. You were always well informed that they were going to visit you.
As for adding to whole anti-Waluigi debate, I'm afraid I have to disagree and say I think he's one of the best characters in the series, personally.
BLASPHEMY? Why yes, and that's exactly why I like him.
I absolutely love playing as characters who piss everyone off. Playing as the most annoying character in the game can only serve to make you win, even if you lose.
Think about it, if I play against you as Waluigi, you've only beaten Waluigi. If you lose to Waluigi - then you've lost to goddamn Waluigi. Playing as him, I can't lose even if I fail the game. It's the reason why I always play as a pink Luigi in Super Smash Bros, or Superstar Cole (With furry purple machine gun and yellow tiger-print shotgun - niggz) in Gears of War 3. For me gaming is all about having a laugh, especially these particular genres, and these characters give me the annoying edge over my opponents. They're so busy loathing me, they always just happen to let their guards down...
I have a Waluigi plushie. I love it. I fought against a hardcore Mario fan (And lost, but meh) during a pre-release match of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games years ago, and he will never forget the majesty of Waluigi in archery (Kicked his ass in that event).
Plus Waluigi looks so right with the Blunderbuss in Olympic Games, he can carry off the upper class country gentleman-gone wrong look so well. He also has the look of classic villains from early 1900s melodramas, just give him the stripy top and he'd be tying Princess Peach onto the Railway Lines in black and white.

Re: Waluigi Discussion
Come on, who can hate Waluigi? He looks like Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races.
Luigi...mess this up, and I'll be an only child.

I was with you up to this point.

Dick Dastardly was my favorite racer! I'm sure I'm not the only one who always rooted for the poor guy.

Dick Dastardly wasn't the half-thought-out evil doppleganger of another character on Wacky Races. Nor did he ruin a franchise the way Scrappy Doo and Cousin Oliver did to Scooby Doo and The Brady Bunch, respectively.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Re: Waluigi Discussion
Waluigi didn't ruin anything. He's just an extra character to bring balance to the Wario character and give Luigi a rival. Unnecessary? Maybe. But he's something new for people who got sick of playing as Mario and the Mario Party ratpack. He's not that bad.

Yes he is. Yes, he is. Waluigi should be put in a noose, which the other end of is tied to the back of a Mario Kart and we have a good old fashioned bad character drag. I want his blood to stain the courses from World 1-1 to World 8-4 so that all the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom know what a stupid, horrible, idiotic, hopeless, dickless, good for nothing, dog-licking, horse-humping sack of monkey shit Waluigi is-- where's the Tylenol?
