Fan-Made Sequel to Super Mario 64

Postby Redstar » Wed Feb 08, 2012 3:27 am

We all (should) know that a sequel to groundbreaking title Super Mario 64 was planned for the failed 64DD add-on console, but was canceled for a variety of reasons before elements would appear in Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin and Super Mario Galaxy.

For many, though, the original game stands as the defining game of that generation and perhaps of modern gaming entirely. A "true" sequel at the time would have been a game-breaker for the system as it battled a wider selection of games on the PlayStation.

So, 16 years later a fan has given us a fascinating look at what could have been. After a year of work hacker Skelux brings us a complete overhaul of the game that features:

-Over 120 stars
-More than 30 nicely designed areas
-Nearly 50 catchy tunes
-Many new objects for Mario to interact with
-Well-polished gameplay
-Lots of goomba stomping
-Mario-style humor

What do you all think? I have fond memories of playing each land for each star to get the full 120. That type of gameplay fueled my desire for full completion in later titles, including Sunshine. It's a game that has infinite possibility for interpretation and evolution, so this game really stands out. Download it in the following places:

For players experiencing freezing at certain points in the game, a patch is now available which may solve it.

That looks really awesome, I've seen hacked sequels of Mario 64 but that one looks the best. But where's Luigi at? Miyamoto said that they had 3D Mario and Luigi running around on the screen for the longest time when they were trying to make the sequel.

But this looks real good, I never had luck with 64 roms so I probably wont download this but it looks awesome. Though Mario Galaxy is supposibly the real sequel to 64, I still don't believe it. Id say 3D Land is more of the true sequel. Im tired of the Galaxy series and, I like Mario on regular land roaming the Mushroom Kingdom and the other lands.

It was always interesting to hunt for the stars. I really want to do this again, because it's fun and it helps to make the game longer interesting, don't you agree? It would be awesome to see a sequel! I also want to see Mario in the Mushroom world :(

Maybe I should play Super Mario 64 again. I cannot believe it's already 16 years old- unbelievable-

I don't think I've read any indication that this game is meant to be a true sequel, so Luigi isn't entirely necessary. It's just a continuation of the themes and gameplay seen in the original. So, more of an expansion.

Super Mario 64 was completely fun, but the star collecting aspect always felt to me to be more 'empty' than the experience offered in Sunshine or Galaxy.
