I'm sure some of you got this game. What do you think so far? I absolutely love it. The box. That's awesome. The game. That's even more awesome. I played through world 2 last night with a friend and it brought back so many old memories, and was like a mind-numbing new Mario experience. So what if it doesn't have online? Screw it! This almost makes up for Nintendo's "we suck and aren't making good Nintendo games anymore" behavior over the past year or two.

This game kicks so much ass. I have a broken hand and its sttill a b.last even when I hurt myself playing. I love this game. When my hand heals, I may dominate it, or play for an hour and stop because I don't wanr ro beat it in 8 hours. Great game, maybe they will remake the Mario movie based off of the new franchise. But if Nintendo was smart they willn have complet supervision over everythihg.

Unfortunately, if Nintendo can't find ample time to make their own games, I don't see them doing any film endeavors.

I honestly meant to say tv show, love to hear a commercial on Cartoon Network saying IT'A THE NEW SUPWE MARIO BROS. SUPER SHOW! But like you said it probly won't happen. Hollywood and Nintend know better. Also I think Sony owns Dic, I'm not 100% sure, but that's probly one of the reasons there is nothing.
Anyway back to NSMBWii.I'm at the end of world 4 about to fight Kootie Pie Koopa/Wendy O' Koopa. I'm trying totake my time with it, because I don't have a choice, and I dont want to beat it in 8 hours in one day, like I did with NSMBDS.

Holy crap, they put the Kooplings in a recent Mario game? I thought they had abandoned them in favor of 'Baby Bowser,' or 'Bowser Junior' or whatever they call that small Bowser thing that seems to have spawned from the depths along with "Waluigi."

Honestly, I just figured Nintendo rebooted the series and retconned the Koopalings in favor of Bowser Jr. That would have been fine, but since they seem to be bringing them back we're just ending up with conflicting canon... Though I suppose they can be considered alternate canons from each other, excepting for the problem this game brings up by featuring the Koopalings as well as Bowser Jr.

My theory on Bowser. Bowsers a hermaphrodite and produces it's own minions some how. OR, Bowser jr is Bowsers real son, while The Koopalings are either nephews, or like his step kids. Either way, I can't stand Baby Bowser, glad the Koopalings are back, they fight in the same style as SMB3. Actually if anything this game is all totally a homeage to part 3, with a bit of SMW in there.
Also Merrt, this isn't the first time the Koopalings returned. They were also in Mario and Luigi 1 on the GBA. In Krakletta(Bowsers) castle, on every floor, there is a Koopa kid waiting to fight RPG style, after fighting each Koopa Kid you fight the last boss which is Bowsers body taken over by a witch.
Also Miyamato has recently said in a interview none of the Mario is canon. Every game is it's own world. I may not agree with Miyamoto though, even though he is the creator. If anything is canon, I'd say its the original SMB trilogy, NSMBDS, and NSMBWii. SMW would have it's own canon since they went ahead and made SMW2Yoshis Island back in 94 or 95. Mario 64 and Sunshine never recieved sequels, so they just hang solo, while Galaxy will start up it's own Canon series since they are coming out with part 2. I hope my view on the Mario canon can help those out who are confused about it. Typing all of that makes me want to make a chart or something.

The Super Mario canon went all to hell after Super Mario World. At least you can make sense of most of the Zelda games. At this point, I just try to go with it. And don't forget the Game Boy games, Wario games, Mario sports, and the RPGs!
And I absolutely loathe Bowser Jr. He's up there with Nintendo's worst characters ever, along with Waluigi and Tingle. Bowser Jr. just makes no sense, and is annoying as hell. Scrapping the Koopa Kids in the games after SMW was understandable--I mean, every time you use them you have to come up with eight ways to do so. And since they went that route they shouldn't have even used Bowser Jr. in the first place.

I didn't count the sports, party, and GB games because that is something completely different. Wario is not Mario, there for he doesn't count. The SML series also wasnt done by Miyamoto, that's another reason. The only good Mario RPG game is SMRPG(SNES) and the M&L Trilogy. I hate Paper Mario but it has a trilogy so I guess it would have it's own canon.
I don't see how you could say Zelda has a better canon than Mario, especially when in ever new Zelda game, Link meets Zelda for the first time acting like he's never met or seen her when he's saved her a million times. The Zelda storyline has been so scrambled up the only person who explains it well was the Angry Video Game Nerd on his "Chronologicly Confused" episode dedicated to Zelda.

Wario may not be Mario, but he does reside in the same world as Mario. Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins for the Game Boy was their first adventure together, and, not counting the Mario Party or sports games, they've also appeared together in Yoshi's Island 2 and Super Mario 64 2.
The Zelda canon is better than the Mario canon because some reference is made to things that have happened before. Each Link and Zelda are supposed to be reincarnated, so of course won't know each other. (Not to say the timeline/canon isn't screwed up, but, hey, it's
there) The Mario series is different because things that happened before are almost never referenced, or if they are, offhandedly with little bearing on the story. The only exception is the Paper Mario series, which hangs a lot of lampshades over the tropes of the series.
As for Bowser Jr... Yeah, I don't like him much either. But I don't
hate him. They just haven't figured out how to use him the right way, is all. Once they do that I'm sure he'll make a welcome addition, but until then he's a gimmick character like Waluigi.

When and what year and or dimension do you live in that SM64 part 2 released? Wario was in SM64DS, but that is a remake not a sequel. Also notice that the game was on a hand held not a console for television. Which Wario is never a playable character, not even in NSMBWii. Mario Party is not a true Mario game, it's a video board game, a PARTY game. That's understandable to have every character be in it. But it's not a TRUE Mario game. Neither are the sports games.
As I stated before to, Miyamoto didn't have anything to do with SML, he's not even in the end credits, unless somebody can prove me wrong.

Every SMB game use older power ups from previous games, they keep some of the original music and remix some of it, Bowser ALWAYS captures Peach. They may not say the references, but they stick out. Mario Galaxy refernces M64 so much, and NSMBWii is a total nod to SMB1-3+World. There really isn't story to these games, so how else will they reference the previous ones other than saying BOWSER STOLE PEACH...AGAIN!

Sorry, I haven't played the game but I figured it might be a sequel of sorts because I made the mistake of assuming the Yoshi's Island sequel on the DS was a remake, when in face it is a sequel. Thought it might have been the same sort of situation, but I did assume it was simply a remake when I first heard of it.
You might want to read my post again. I said the Mario Party and sports games aren't to be counted.
ultimateemail5000 wrote:As I stated before to, Miyamoto didn't have anything to do with SML, he's not even in the end credits, unless somebody can prove me wrong.
Miyamoto may not have had anything to do with SML, but it's still a Mario game. There's a different kind of "word of God" situation going on in this series. It's not like
Dune, where only Frank Herbert's originals count; rather, it's like Star Trek, when media after Roddenberry's death (other than Enterprise) can still be canon. The Super Mario series is a
franchise, meaning its purpose is to make money. As long as there's still a creative spark behind a Mario game, it's canon to me. SML falls under that, the Party and sports games don't.

Those aren't really references. They're more things common to the series. Use of a certain gun in Resident Evil 2 that was present in the first doesn't make it a reference... It's simply a gameplay mechanic.
Actually, now that I think of it, Super Mario Sunshine contains a references to most of the previous games in the series during the opening montage after you find FLUDD.

Okay, I'm glad, I thought you were trying to start some crazy rumor that Mario 64 2 does exist.
I forgot about FLUDD's little video montage of previous games in the corner from his POV. I also try to forget about Sunshine too.
Donkey Kong Jr is the sequel to DK. Mario was the bad guy who kidnapped DK, and DKJr had to save his pep pep, or his meemaw, one of the two. They prolly ripped off their own creation and made Bowser Jr. what I'm saying.

Haha. I actually quite liked Sunshine. The only things lacking are the story, which kinda dropped off after the "Shadow Mario is Bowser Jr." reveal, and the lack of levels. If there was just
one more stage, then it would have been filled out. A jungle stage with Yoshis was what pretty much everyone wanted. Unfortunately, because of that lack, the game just feels really small.

It exists in the way the 1989 Terry Gilliam version of "Watchmen" exists: It's halfway finished and will never see the light of day.

You can get a 64DD on ebay for a very high price, I'm not sure if it's region free or not, there could be a chance it is.
I never liked SMS Brcause of Fludd. I didn't like the idea of Mario having a water gun, after hearing 5 years before the game was gonna come out "Mario will be mature in his new game." It was not mature at all, infact it was way childish than any other Mario game. Plus it didn't have all the moves like the long jump, or back flip. Mario couldn't even duck. No Goombas either. The Boo's came back, but they were uhh weird looking and had balls for tales instead of pointy tails like areal ghost.
Some say SMB2 is the black sheep, well I think SMS is the black sheep. I never fully beat that game either, I beat it to the end but didn't go back for everything. The best part though has to be the Hawaiin shirt and sunglasses Mario recieves.

The FLUDD is an odd gimmick, but it works. The only things I don't like about the game are the aborted story and the lack of a final course to run through. Other than that, it's a decent game.
As for maturity, I'd say the only place in SMS you can get that is in the bonus worlds. The music for some of them are just plain eerie.
I've been involved in the ROM hacking scene awhile, seen some of the projects they got. Finally, just the last few years, some real progress has been made on hacking N64 games. There's at least one project I know of that heavily hacks Super Mario 64 into a sequel game with all new stages, levels, and story. Even opened up some of the beta elements stashed in the coding for expanded fun. So unless you want to settle for the official sequels, this is something you might want to check out.

I've never attempted playing any game through emulator except for Game Boy and NES games, so can't help you there. (Don't think I could anyways, since the idea of anything more advanced than those two running on my computer freaks me out)
If interested:
http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/thread.php?id=4285Hi, this is an ambitious project some of you may already know from the Screenshots/Video thread.
It's a collaborative project (actually, so far only two people but I'm looking for more people to help) that has been going on for about two months and whose purpose is to make the first ever Mario 64 hack from scratch.
Levels are built mainly from an enhanced version of my "Platform Battlefield" patch, which is an modification of the Flat terrain setting included in the last versions of Toad's Tool 64.
It will feature about 5 complete new levels, plus many other areas to explore. I don't have a storyline or title yet. Other features include the option to play as Mario or Luigi, a Day-Night Cicle, music from other games as well as custom music, tweaked enemies AI and more!

Sunshine was okay. I played all the way through it. The last boss was great, but I just wanted to throw up every time Bowser Jr. reared his ugly head on screen. FLUDD was okay and the water effects were marvelous, but at the end of the day it really didn't feel much like a Mario game and had a real "is this the best they can come up with?" kind of feel.
And for what it's worth, I enjoyed the hell out of Super Mario 64 DS. That's the game SM64 should have been from the start--all the additions made it fell a lot more like a Mario game, IMO.

I've been having fun with it so far, the return of the Koopa Kids

I warped from I think world 5 to world 8. I'm gonna go back. I beat Kamek's castle and saved it. Pretty fun I must say. Does anyone know after you beat it if you can choose who you play as in one player mode? I'd love to play as Luigi.

Man oh man there were some tough moments where I lost plenty of lives. Beat everything with all the star coins. Trying to get a Star Coin I triggered the stupid Luigi guide block once so I guess I missed my chance to have it done with that...
overall a very fun game. I found myself quoting the Mario movie while playing, usually either "Bob Omb!!" or "Gooomba!!"

It's been about 2 weeks since I've been able to play this game and I really say, this is meant for any Mario fan, or any new gamers out there. 99 lives Mario loses his hat, that's really cool. I have only two more worlds to collect the gold coins from, but I've been buying a lot of the secret ending video clips and just playing levels for hte fun of it. I don't want it to end, even though I baet the main story.
The suits are the best of all. It's kind of funny, if they would have put blue sleeves on his propeller suit, and maybe a blue line going down in the middle instead of a white one, it would look very close to the movie version jumpsuit. The Penguin suit is the best, makes me want to find a giant Penguin suit and make it look like the one in the game, wait for the snow to hit the groudn hardcore, and slide on my stomach wearing a penguin suit down the street or on a hill in public. I bet it's possible.
The Koopa kids are back that's always a plus side and, so are a lot of original enemies and objects. The one I was most shocked to see was the dragon you ride over lava with in SMW. The best part about the ending, I'm not giving to many spoilers, that last battle isn't a normal pow pow pow Bowsers dead, or a I'll run under or jump over him raelly fast and get the axe. It's a lot better, they actually put time into tha tlast battle I can tell.
This game rocks and I highly suggest anyone who is a new or old scool gamer, or even want their kids to get involved with it, this is really for them.
It raelly hurts me as a Nintendo 80's nerd to know that kids today don't grow up playing Mario when 20 years ago, that's what video games were. Now they just want to play COD, and GTA. Both are fun games, but never nearly as fun as Mario IMO. I remember a few years ago at Best Buy I heard a little kid tell his gramme after she asked him "What about Mario do you want that game?" and hte kid was like "I don't like Mario." It made me feel so old, I couldn't believe my ears, a young kid who likes games doesn't like Mario. Something's wrong wtih todays society of children and video games, and that's why NSMBWii, is there to solve all those problems.

I only need one more world to collect all the star coins then beat 9-7 and I beat the game. I have never used any of the Luigi, I never died 8 times. The great part though is in Peach's castle you can use Star Coins to unlock videos that show where hidden items are at and what not. So there was barrely any need to get a players guide or hit up gamefaqs.

That would be great if you could play as Luigi as first player, considering he's my fav character. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, but unfortunately only got 5 non-sparkly stars because I died over 8 times trying to beat Bowser, lol.
Though I did help my friend get the 5 sparklies on his file 2p mode, so i guess that could count haha.
