Anybody getting their copy today? I am, hopefully i am still up at 9 when gamestop opens or something, I'm ready for my copy. Usually when a Mario game comes out I have a cartoon up for it but unfortunetly I dont. Since NSMBW was such a big deal wiht the anime dub, there is in deed no new Mario cartoon up this year. Nor probably will there be in a long time, maybe after Craeture is filmed of course.

Yeah! I got it the day it came out, I've beat the whole thing except for the last prankster comet star on the last galaxy. So annoying...

I have I believe 66 stars now. I got myself so panicky doing Purple Coins in the Shadow Vault because I watched a video of it and luckily got it on the first try with one hit to spare. I guess it's not too hard if you look at the height levels the way the coins are set up and avoid backtracking as much as you can and don't stop!!!
I then just got pissed last night from the purple coin big tree slide. I got Game Over twice last night LOL

Oh, if you didn't know this, here's a super-easy and hilarious 1-up trick that I figured out:
In Supermassive Galaxy, get to the little planet with the three huge Koopa Troopas. Long jump onto one of them, and manage to stay on its back for as long as you can; it'll give you as many 1-ups as you want

I have to try that turtle 1-up trick, I have to admit I'm not at the green stars yet. I actually have been taking my time with this one it's just that good of a game. Right now though I have 103, I have to get enough stars to unlock what looks like a nomral block in S-World, then feed that luma 2000 starbits or something. If I'm wrong correct me or I will later. This games is just completely badass, and I am already hoping for a part 3. They need to bring back the Tanooki suit.

Bull crap it has, this is the hardest game since Sunshine, and I honestly dispise Sunshine. I'm at 159 stars now.

Totally disagree. The downward spiral would've been around Mario Sunshine. Nintendo totally redeemed the franchise with the original Super Mario Galaxy, and honestly Galaxy 2 is probably the best Mario game since Super Mario World.

Super Mario World, huh? Given your age I'd expect you to think SMB3 was the absolute pinnacle of the series, though I'm surprised you went this far back at all by excluding 64... I won't argue Sunshine. Loved the game but it left a lot to be desired. Thoughts on New Super Mario Bros. Wii?
Needless to say, I think the series is at its height. Even its lows were never that low.

Well, to me, I don't see anything wrong with SMW. It's almost like a Galaxy/Galaxy 2 parallel. They both start off with an interesting new twists on gameplay, while staying completely "Mario." And the second installment just gets better, and they add Yoshi
I guess it's a result of playing the early games, the cartoons, and movie, but all of those things gave Mario a certain "feel." And to me it felt like a lot of that was completely ripped away with Super Mario 64. From that point on, SM64 was really the only thing you had, and then Nintendo started all of the sports things and such. Even though I love SM64, it didn't feel completely like a Mario game should, though it's worth noting that SM64DS helped bring back that feel a LOT.
Redstar wrote:Thoughts on New Super Mario Bros. Wii?
NSMB Wii should have been released way earlier on the Gamecube instead of Sunshine. That's the game we needed years ago, but at least they got around to it. Definitely love the return of the Koopa Kids, although I can't stand how they STILL include Bowser Jr, ugh. And although Mario games have never had the most involved or epic stories, now they're just really giving up on it and making it involve cake in some way. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't SM64 start this trend as well?
Redstar wrote:Needless to say, I think the series is at its height. Even its lows were never that low.
All in all, the series really is at a high point, because there are brand new, polished, amazing Mario games in both the traditional 2D and newer 3D styles. If there ever was a Mario "drought," it would've been the period between the release of SM64 and Galaxy 1. Not that there was anything terribly wrong with any of the games released in between, but Galaxy 1 really captured back the franchise.

SMW has always been my favorite Mario game. It was the first I'd ever played, followed by SMB1, then 3, and then I think we finally got All Stars so my range expanded. SMW will always be the best for me, especially since it was the first Mario game where Miyamoto was finally able to put everything he wanted into the experience (Yoshi in particular).

I agree with you there. SM64 was a great game but it never really felt like a "Mario" game to me. It's revolutionary for its genre, but the only reason it's really so popular is because they wrapped it around Mario. However, a lot of the concepts found in the game (such as good Bob-Ombs, a Goomba King, talking Boos, etc.) were later expanded into a proper Mario mythos with the RPGs. Never played the DS re-release/remake, but infusing some of the later expanded mythology would make me have to check it out.

I don't mind Bowser, Jr., but I do prefer the Koopalings. The open-environment entries into the series would have so much more going for them with the Koopalings as mini-bosses. Their possibilities are squandered as-is.

There very likely won't be a third installment. It's surprising there was even a second, considering "Super Mario World 2" and "Super Mario 64 2" were both planned, yet were ultimately cancelled when their home consoles either ran their course or were never successful. At this point we're looking at a potential "Super Mario Universe" or such-and-such game for the Wii U.

I'm fine with just the two; I'd rather they not exhaust the concept in short order, especially since I think they said they have no ideas left. Better to give them time to refresh...
And after the drought of Mario games (save for one each) during the N64 and GameCube eras (and SNES, to a degree), I'm okay with where things are now.

I agree. Nintendo needs the time to figure out how to make a Mario game for the WiiU that shows us exactly why the WiiU is a fresh, innovative system.
The only problem is that I'd make a wager that we won't see this game until the WiiU has already been out for 1-2 years.

Actually there is a SMW2, it's Yoshi's Island. But if you wanna go by the Jaanese, it was never called SMW2 there.
I think that they will do something new with the Mario series, but I'm sure it will be the same thing, collect stars slide down a ole. Its like they kee making the same gam over and over, but we kee getting suckered in.

@jka
So... The galaxy games, the only shining star in the modern Mario franchise, is the death of the series. Sure, not the bland, soulless, generic rip-offs of the side-scrolling era and the endless stream of minigame compilations that Nintendo's been churning out.
Yes, by all means, the only part of the franchise that is actually progressing and keeping that spirit of innovation that captured us all in the first place alive is the death of it. Stop that. You are wrong, sir. Just.... no. Don't even respond. Go play Galaxy. Play the whole thing. It is a very good video game.

Yes, it is, and it only gets better with the second installment. In my opinion, the best of the best when it comes to Mario games is the original Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo, Super Mario 64 and Galaxy 1 and 2.

I don't know how well a third Super Mario Galaxy would do on the market. I know personally that I didn't even care much for the first game. But despite my opinion the game did really well and received good reviews and ratings. I baught the game knowing that it was probably going to be fun and so that I could enjoy the game, but I also baught it because I wanted to unlock Rosalina in 'Mario Kart Wii'.
I didn't hear much of anything about Super Mario Galaxy 2, so I'm guessing it wasn't as big of a hit as the first, and it kind of seems like the ideas and concepts are being recycled already in the second installment. I feel that there will probably be another Super Mario game released with the new Wii U and all but I just don't think that it will be another 'Galaxy' take. But to answer your question of have not heard anything about a third installment.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 really was more of an evolution of the core concepts seen in its predecessor, but amped up to 11. It does nothing in terms of continuing or expanding the story, but the gameplay was certainly refined and perfected. The addition of Yoshi alone was a masterful attempt towards refreshing the game. They just couldn't have had him in the first without seeing how well it would play.

Oh, okay. My favorite free roaming (I think it's called 'free-roaming') Mario games are still and probably always will be Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Wario World, and Luigi's Mansion.

I realy liked the free roaming in sm64, there hasnt been much of it since Sunshine, which is a fun game, but not the best Mario game. Nintendo needs to do something like that again, they did it with 3D land which is amazing, but I just didnt like how short the levels were. They need to make levels that take 10 minutes to beat.

The Supper Mario Broth tumblr posted a great image of a beta vegetable from the first Galaxy game. It's very reminiscent of those from Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA), which would have been a great design aesthetic for a planet. The Tumblr owner points out it would be an amazing theme for an upcoming Wii U game!

They really should do another SMB2 style game. I read that Miyamoto said that is hi favorite Mario game, and I'm smacking myself on the forehead saying, if that's his favorite mario game, make another like it instead of rehashing the same thing! But he also said the director of Doki Doki made the game that way and he doesn't know how to do that style...but I know they could do it.

I was elated to find that was his favorite, as I have so much love for that game.
A new one would be divine... even better would be if they did a 2D one in the NSMB style (or even tried something new, art-wise) and a 3D one. I'd love to see how Plucking Power translated into 3D.

It's the last star you can get in the game. I think it's called "The Perfect Run." Basically, it's the hardest level in the game--and you can't be hit even once.

So I beat that level two years ago on my red wii, but sold it forgetting to transfer the memory over to my real Wii. I transfered everything over to the WiiU and thought I'd try for that star again. My first try I beat it yesterday. I was honestly hoping that would tie me over till 3D World, but not now.
