Because according to Nintendo, Mario is born and raised in the Mushroom Kingdom.

It would be interesting if they could maintain the current origin for Mario and Luigi while still having them enter and explore "our" world. The platforming focus of the Mario series would translate perfectly to an urban environment.

Actually he's right. Nintendo has officially stated that Mario and Luigi were born in the Mushroom Kingdom and that they have no last name.

In regards to this topic. Yeah, I always thought it would be cool to see the Mario characters come to the "real world" in a game. I imagined it being in a 3d environment with Mario leaping across rooftops and such.

Hmmm come to think of it, perhaps such a game could be a spinoff of the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon - i.e. because some episodes are set in our world ('the real world', as the Mushroom folk call it)? So yes, maybe it could work...

Oh and come to think of it... is the Mushroom folk calling our world 'the real world' meant to be another means of breaking the 4th wall? :)

Not so sure if this counts but nintendo has announced Super Mario for 3DS, which looks just like Mario64, only better.

Since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, released in 1995. Also, I don't think it was ever explicitly stated that they were from Brooklyn, "Our World." It was just sort of commonly assumed since the original Donkey Kong appeared to be set in New York.

Plus Miyamoto saying Mario Bros. was in "New York sewers" or some-such, though that might have been as much an adjective as it was a specific backdrop.

As far as I know, they've both officially gone with the Brooklyn thing and the Mushroom Kingdom bit... sometimes the former after the latter, if memory serves.

That said, there may have once been one wacky game that was going to take Mario's battle with Bowser to our world...

You're all confusing the games canon with the cartoon canon, which is totally unrelated to the film canon. Not all Mario games are completely canon to one another, and just like in Hollywood, things change from time to time-- there's a different origin story for different games.

According to some sources, Mario and Luigi come from Brooklyn, according to others, they come from the Mushroom Kingdom. Personally, I buy into the idea of them coming from Brooklyn more often than naught, because it would seem they have (in the games anyway) some rudimentary plumbing skills. However, that doesn't take into effect the fact that the Mushroom Kingdom is a world full of pipes that go from one place to another, which could mean that (in certain game canon) that they are in fact from the Mushroom Kingdom, which would be a place in dire need of plumbers, seeing that it has all those pipes.

As for the Mario Brothers not having last names, that I just don't buy at all-- in any canon. They're the "Mario Brothers," meaning that their last name is Mario. If their names were say... Mario and Luigi Corleone, then they would be the "Super Corleone Brothers," but they're not-- they're the "Mario Brothers," there's really no working your way around that. Also, if they're from the Mushroom Kingdom, why do they have Italian accents?
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
