The Mario Bros are working in the sewers of Brooklyn. An earth quake happens and a brick from the cieling breaks out and smacks Luigi on the head leaving him unconcious, falling to the ground. A giant warp pipe appears under him sucking him up, Mario jumps in after his brother and finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom. Hearing Peach in distress, he gains super powers and charges straight for her. Will he defeat Bowser and find his brother? Find out when this cartoon is completed.
I removed the original storyboards for good reasons.
UPDATE
Here it is, the moment we waited for
ANIMATION AND VOICE IS DONE! I sent the the video off to the sound guy to mix the music in, and it should be up this week! I hope everyone enjoys it.

Dude thanks, I'm sure those who saw this have noticed though that a lot of stuff from this is taken from other Mario cartoons/comics/movie. Only re-written in a short quick story. I want to animate so bad, but with the anime fandub, and all the VO's rolling in for auditions, there's no point, I have this fandub to edit and put together.

Just one complaint... Please don't go with the firey aura-power-up sequence. Please... This might just be my personal preference speaking, but I am getting really sick of the Mario anime references appearing every.

I honestly wouldn't have a problem with it if the "aura" was more fire than energy... I believe the Smash series already has Mario and Luigi use some sort of aura when they shoot fire anyways, at least in the commercials and cut-scenes. In fact I think I'd even prefer this sort of representation as the quick-fire kind of fire-use isn't exactly animation-friendly; it was more of a game mechanic where attacks have to be fast. In an actual animation there has to be some build-up and variance in how an attack works to create dramatic tension and realism.
I don't know how I missed this thread but the story and storyboards are amazing. For some reason the casual use of a SMB2 potion really feels right to me. It would be nice if there was more integration of that game into the official canon universe than simply assimilating enemies. I really hope you find the time to animate this short at some point. You really have a lot of potential in this area. Your Mario works simply brings the Fanstuff forum to life.

Good to hear! Seems we're all working on projects to celebrate Mario's 25th in our own way. A simple, old-style animation would really suit the fellow.

I just finished writing the re-wrote the script, a good five pages. Takes the Bros. back to the original days, with a blend of 83' Mario Bros, going into SMB, with the style of the DIC, and the original comic books. I'm going to hand draw everything on tracing paper and make it possibly the best animation I could ever do. Wish me luck on this one guys, cause I wanna blow some minds with this thing.

Just another update, started new storyboards, that look amazing so far. It involves Mario connecting a ton of broken pipes...think the SMA comic.
Also since this isn't really a remake, it's more a 25th anniversery thing, could thread be moved to the general section?

Sounds great! I haven't read that particular comic but I imagine Mario repairing pipes would begin a great adventure!

I just wanted to let the fans of my last years Mario anime dub, will be pleased to hear that the VA for one of the Toad's, and Princess Peach, will be returning to reprise her roles as Toad and Peach for my upcoming Mario cartoon. More updates soon to come!

Great! I love that kind of consistency from one project to the next. They'll definitely add some talent and perhaps some more range to this cartoon if you're willing to write to their particular nuances. Loving the progress on this.

I sent her the lines for Toad and Peach so I should get them in a week or so. She's been doing VA for anime dubs since, and I bet she has improved. I sometimes have complaints about her voice being to high pitch for Peach, but honestly watch the Japanese version of the dub and hear her voice...it's very high pitch.
It's a shame though for this cartoon it's not going ot be very long, i'd say a minute or two, but evreything moves so fast it'll feel like 5 minutes.
I finished three of the animated sequences on paper, until my desktop gets back up, I'll be working on putting them together, and possibly have some screen shots.
Still debating if Luigi should wear green and white, to follow the SMB color scheme. I was going to make him just a clone of Mario like the original designs and games, but I couldn't get myself to do that.

I think green and white would be great. I've always liked the original color schemes as a quirk of the original characters that hadn't been worked out yet. Considering this is an anniversary cartoon I think it'd be a cool nostalgic throwback to revert back to those color schemes, though I agree entirely that making Luigi a complete clone in terms of appearance and personality wouldn't work out as well.

Do you think I should go for my Borat Luigi voice? Or should I make it in the tone of Danny Wells Brooklyn accent, to match Mario's a bit more.

My vote will always be for Danny Wells. And as this is an anniversary cartoon, it'd be nostalgic.

I was thinking that too. Also when I made the dub, I recently ignored the criticsm the dub got, but the one thing I had to agree with one some points is Luigi's voice being strictly Borat style. It ruined the feel that these guys are actually from Brooklyn.

Danny Wells-style, though whatever style your voice actor can emulate best should be fine as long as it feels right for "Luigi".

You're talking to the VA. Remember I did about 90% of the voices from the anime dub.

I litterly worked almost all day on this thing. So I thuoght I would share some pics for a behind the scenes look of the upcoming cartoon.
^ This was made I believe two years ago when I had the idea in my head, but hadn't did anything with it. It is completely on cel, and is I believe 4 layers.
^ These were made, I would say around April of last year, still once again the idea was knockin in my mind, and I knew these were the designs I wanted to go for. They were copied by hand off of the original designs, then traced from my own drawings to be colored in like a cel. Note, Luigi will be white and green for this one.
^ This is a scene that involves Mario falling from the sky. The new version is nothing like my original storyboards that are posted up above. The whole thing has been re-storyboarded.
^ A simple Mario jump.
^ Gotta save the best for last, the King of the Koopas, Bowser. I finished animating this pose into a straight forward walk, which was very difficult but pulled it off. Still not really happy with it so hopefully tweaking it on the computer will solve my problem.
That's all I have for now. There are a ton more of drawings done, but I don't want to show off to many of them, wouldn't want to spoil anything. Even though the original storyboard draft is at the very top of the thread.

Bowser looks more like he should have a bit of a sumo-wrestler movement. You've got him as a great, hulking monster, and he should have a great, hulking walk cycle to go along with it. Remember he's got that shell on his back, too.

This is the worst update ever for this project, as it leans toward the actual movie development(that's a joke, I don't think anything could be that bad.) Anywho, have heard no word from the VA for Peach, no reply, so it leads me no choice but to give a few more days and recast the roles...as much as that sucks, I really wanted the same VA to be Peach, but it's probably going to happen.
Also, my tower died, completely. So the only thing left for me to do was to download the latest version of the Flash demo onto my none CD/DVD/BDR Drive of a laptop, with less space on it. Here's to hoping everything will be alright. It's like nothing big involving the Mario Bros can end up nothing but bad, unless by bad you mean nostalgic moments as in good.

That's pretty bad. Hopefully you can find someone just as talented, if not moreso, to voice Toadstool for you. At least you have the other roles pretty much covered.
This is apparently a common thing. I've personally broken computers but I've never actually seen a computer's hard drive crash, etc. Probably comes from someone using it right. Anyways, I hope your laptop can manage. Hopefully you can animate the entirety of the work during the trial period, otherwise I'm sure there's simple alternatives to getting more time.

Just when I said things were looking bad, they're not so bad. I actually got my copy of Flash to work on my laptop, and spent about 5 to six hours animating today. So I thought I'd show off some preview stills.
The VA for Peach replied she's still down, she just has been busy with college stuff so in time I know I'll hear from her. But if I have this finished before she gets a hold of me, replacements may happen...

It's looking great. I love the use of colors, especially in the Mushroom Kingdom. It's very offbeat and almost alien. I can see it coming off a little like Wonderland with giant alien flora in the background. That would be cool.
Great that Toadstool's VA finally got back to you. Hopefully you can use her instead of finding a replacement.

Just a quick update, I should have the Peach lines in a couple days, a lot of drawings have been finished today. The project is taking way longer than I expected. It's not a walk in the park like the technition meltdown was. Because of the difficult angles I'm animating with, (Think of the original Fliescher Popeye cartoons, how they'd have all kinds of crazy angles you don't often see in animation now a days, though probably not as good as that animation) and Koopa alone to animate is hard becuase he is so huge.
Stay tooned for more updates...

Two new screencaps from production.
What could this colorful place be?
The first scene with the brothers together. I like the way Luigi's colors turned out, I made the white a hint of a very light green.

Oh jeez... You're only drawing inspiration from the original Super Mario Bros., right? My guess would either be a surreal, Alice in Wonderland-like take on traveling through a pipe or going through a Warp Zone. That's about all I can figure.

If you mean drawing inspiration from the original SMB character designs, yes. I've been really looking carefully at a lot of the original artwork and creating it in my own, but trying to make it look close to the originals as much as possible.
And you are totally right, that is a warp zone. If you save the picture it will tell you exactly what it is hahaha.

The voice actress for Peach and Toad sent me her lines and they incredible. I can not wait to animate the scenes with Peach just so I can begin lip syncing, as I animate. Since as of right now, that is the only piece of recorded dialogue I have.
Another update, the beginning of the short is rolling along smoothly, I have finished just about 95% of beginning and middle. I hope to see this online in atleast December. I just have to find time to record the brothers, Koopa, and some Troopa's voices, and it will be complete.
Also I have decided this will be my very first animated and edited film on flash. I usually use editing software for that process, but I'm taking a chance on this to get the highest of high quality HD I can get, and it will be enhanced Widescreen.

I'm super worried about my decision on making it all in Flash...apparently for some reason it's only saving in the format as the Super Mario Bros movie DVD, and when I save it as a movie file nothign is animating at all. It's just still frames, as if it's a anamatronic. At times like this I really need my desktop but it will not turn on, it just beeps...and beeps...
For an update though, I finished a ton of frames today on paper, including Peach, Bowser, Toad, Mario, Goombas, Buzzy Beetles. Designs have also been finished for Koopa Troopa, Spikes, and for the good guys, Peachs' mushroom guards.
I found my player guides to SMBDX and, SMA(SMB2). Which has a lot of official 2D art, so a lot of my drawings will hopefully match the official drawings as close as possible.

Wow! I'm looking forward to this even more now that I'm hearing how many enemies and people will be featured. Mushroom Guards are typically overlooked, but an anniversary cartoon would be a great place to feature them as they're seen in a lot of early artwork.
That teaser looks great as well. Really getting me hyped.

I have not updated in a while, but this project is still being worked on. Since mostly everything is done, I've slowed down the pace of things with the cartoon. Example I'll put maybe an hour or two into it. That of effort into this cartoon is for detail and glitches with animation I have found, and new scenes.
I will spill some beans for the opening of the cartoon. It will feature a 10 second recap of my Mario Bros cartoon Kitchen Madness, with a narrator saying "Previously on Mario Bros." So basicly Kitchen Madness is a prologue to SMB.
I also come bearing gifts with one snapshot of the cartoon in complete outline.
Sorry for lack of updates, the cartoon isn't dead or abandoned, it's just slowly progressing now since a lot of the huge are done or need tweaked.

Glad to see that you've made so much progress on this project. Updates have been slow going, but it's always a treat when you do post something because I know that you've made genuine progress. I think it's cool to connect the film to your previous Kitchen Madness. That'll do a lot in making it feel like a real world.

It's terrible I haven't updated lately, i just don't want to update evrey time I finish a scene, I only like to update on important information, and perhaps screencaps once in a while.
When I finish this one, I would like to make a video for youtube that's a menu in the same style as Mario All Stars, and it has links to cartoons based on SMB(production), SMB2(JP)(N/A), SMB2(USA)(N/A), and SMB3(N/A). A script has been written for SMB2(USA), I have ideas for Lost Levels, and SMB3. Just have to finish part 1 first. If this is done it would take atleast 5 years probably hahahaha.
