I'm a HUGE Super Mario Bros movie fan. I watched this film in the theaters when it was first released when I was 12 years old, and I loved it! I never understood the hate surrounding this film. When I first watched this film in the theaters when I was 12, everyone in the theater seemed to love it, cheer, laugh, etc. I thought it did well. I didn't actually realize that it was so hated by people until recently, when I looked it up online. It's always been a favorite of mine.
A lot of the hate for this film I feel is misplaced and misinterpreted. People back then seem to have wanted a carbon copy clone of the original games, but what they got instead was a very clever "alternate history" take on the marioverse. Now given the recent internet popularity of "alternate universe" artwork and stories, this film fits in as a perfect example of that.
So I can understand it's emerging cult status. I'm glad it's finally getting the recognition it deserves as an alternate universe take on the mario universe. From reading the earlier versions of the script, it seems even more references were intended, but never realized in the final film.
