Another True Believer.

Postby lou ouija » Fri Feb 08, 2013 1:13 am

Hello, everyone.

I'm a lifelong Mario fan, and I suppose it's the recent stream of mediocrity from the video game series that lead me to look back on its highlights. As a child of the 80's, the Mario games, to me, seemed to push the envelope, and recently, I've grown impatient with Nintendo's "play-it-safe" conservatism. Having re-watched the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! DVD's too many times to remain sane, I realized something was missing...

Like so many before me, I had approached this movie the wrong way. I wanted a literal, precise interpretation of the Mushroom Kingdom on film, which today sounds ridiculous. After the initial viewing, I wanted to put it in the back of my mind and pretend it never happened. I am utterly ashamed to say that, over the years, I have trash-talked this movie at every opportune moment. I am now on a "spiritual" quest to make amends. The thought that it was naysayers, like me, who are responsible for the shoddy box-office intake and lack of a sequel makes me cringe in shame.

After reading some insightful reviews on Amazon, I was lead to this site by Steven Applebaum, and I haven't looked back. After a recent viewing, I can honestly say that I enjoyed the film, and especially Hoskins and Leguizamo as the Mario Brothers. The film's "dark" history and production woes could easily be a film in their own right.

After all these years, I finally have Super Mario Bros. sitting proudly on my DVD shelf. I feel at peace, and I owe it to this site, and people, smarter than I, who were the first to acknowledge that this film was not a "terrible movie", but a victim of circumstance. I do Trust the Fungus, and I hope these 20th anniversary screenings pull through. Thanks for reading.

Well, that's very insightful! We're not all natural lovers of the movie, some of us have to grow into it. I agree with the fact that the making of the film could be a biopic period piece all itself-- I might just write that movie (I'm a freelance screenwriter and author). I also like your screen name-- I didn't get it at first, I was sitting there thinking "Huh, 'Lou Ouija,' I don't even-- ohhh." Anyway, welcome to the board!
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Welcome to the forums! It's always great to bring in another "true believer," as you put it. May I ask how you find our site? :)
