Hi one and all,

Ok normally I don't join forums and when I do I'm rubbish with posting on them. However I owe a great deal of thanks to this sight for refrence photos and I love the Mario movie so I'll try and stick around a little longer on this one

You see on Saturday 25th of May I attended the MCM Expo London film and Comic con. I noted last year how many hundreds of Mario's and Luigis there where. So as a little bit of a joke responce to that I decided to go as Movie Mario this year. I'm also a massive fan of the film. I have almost all of the toys (Apart from the Devo gun.) loose and carded/boxed and I even managed to convince (She didn't need much convincing.) my girlfriend to change her Odieon work Badge's named film to Super Mario Bros.

Shockingly alot of people didn't even know it was a movie. Anyway all in all it was a great day. Thanks to whoever has uploaded so many photos on this site it helped alot.

As one of the site's staff let me just officially welcome you to the forums and let you know how appreciative we feel that you decided to cosplay as the film's version of Mario. It's been done before, but not very often and only rarely well.

May I ask your process? The boots really are remarkable, especially since no one has been able to recreate them before.

Some of you are asking about the boots. Originally I sculpted them from clay but the mould went waaaay wrong so I salvaged what I could and cast latex covers which I glued over some cheap secondhand ski boots then painted them up. I'm currently in the planning stages of making a Goomba costume with working mouth. I'm a complete armature at this stuff and this is only my 2nd costume. I'm also toying with making a movie Luigi and having a red kinda Ghostbuster proton pack to mimic Luigis mansion.

Surprisingly there where guys there dressed as Mario who had no idea what I was dressed as and unaware that the movie even happend. Which I found odd.

That's brilliant. The boots are such an iconic element of the film that it's a surprise replicas haven't been attempted more often. If you have any close-up photos or work-in-progress designs/photos you should definitely post them.

I remember someone on here had attempted a Goomba suit before, although they didn't finish it. You can read the thread HERE. There's a video of the animatronic neg rig that was made, which might be helpful for you.

Yeah those boots are pretty incredible. I'd love to see more of the process that went into them! I'm also sure you could make extra painted latex covers and sell them for quite a bit.

Hopefully it will be the full 7 feet tall. I have a few ideas on how to control the head. I’ll have to take a look at that sculpt to get some ideas. Still trying to decide on what Goomba I’m going to make. Leaning more towards Toad at the moment.

Well here are some more photos. The first are of the clay sculpt which I made over the ski boots. It was all looking good until I casted the boot. The cast ended up being accidently smashed so I had to piece together what I could. I rely didn't think it was going to work and I had practically written these boots off.






The mold held out enough to make two boot covers and after a little bit of work on them I painted and then stuck them to the ski boots.



And this is what they look like now after a heavy day of walking around London in the rain. Lucky for me I made them waterproof


So as you can see it was a simple way of doing them. There not perfect but served there purpose well. It would have been nice to see what the full cast would have came out like but there's always next time.

The boots look pretty good for a first attempt. I imagine that now that you know what you're doing you could improve on the process quite a deal. If that's the case you might be looking at potential customers for their own costumes!

Indeed; I was hoping to have some for this year, but my budget fell through. Did you already know how to cast stuff from clay, or was there a guide you used?

I partially knew how to cast already where I had made masks in the past. There alot of guides online but the most difficult part is mixing the plaster just right. My advice is to practice a little on something else first so you csn get an idea of how to mix the plaster.

I would like to give this another go sometime. I've got a couple of other projects on the go also and working fulltime makes it hard to find time to work on these but hopefully I'll have a better pair soon.

Like I said before, you could really sell these. We run into people mentioning wanting a pair all the time; if you did a limited run of red and green (Mario and Luigi colors) you could easily make a profit through eBay.

Who knows, maybe we could even work together by having a few pairs as tier rewards through a Kickstarter project.
