It's-a-me...

Postby Mario86 » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:00 pm

Hi everyone!

I recently discovered this website and this community thanks to a certain Steven Applebaum (aka Redstar on this board, right?) who contacted me through my Mario-related website a few days ago.

I have to confess that I sincerely admire the nice work here to build a full database about that movie I watched first when I was 7 and I still enjoy nowadays. 8)

I don't know if I'm the first French person to register here but I live in Reims, the homeland of Champagne ~ 80 miles away from Paris, and I'm a bit known in the retrogaming French internet sphere for my 9-year old Super Mario reference website and also for being the president of the Super Mario Kart French Federation (because it does exist).

I'm a Mario fan since 1992 and I collect everything I can about the Brooklyn plumber for ages, inc. games, goodies, stuff about the movie, even if I'm specializing in video game collecting. I'm also highly involved in the Super Mario Kart Time Trial World Rankings and championships.

I don't have a lot of time but I'll try to post as much as possible here and also hope to send the movie VHS scans Redstar waits so much from me

Cheers! ;)

Yes, that was me. :D

I'm glad to see you had the time to take up my offer and stop by. It's always great to help another fan of the movie realize there's a place just for us. And what a place this is! :P We have more information and discussion on the movie than anywhere else. I'm surprised more people haven't heard of it, really.

Feel free to post in any topic, no matter how old, if you feel you have something to contribute. We welcome the discussion, plus I'm interested in hearing the perspective of a French fan. I'm sure your release is somewhat different in terms of runtime and lines (rewritten during dubbing).

Well, if you're interested, someday I can try to write a complete French script of the movie, I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist anywhere on the internet and it could be an exclusive addition to your website.

I felt really sorry when I realized that I hadn't discovered this SMB The Movie database before, I've bookmarked it of course and will probably read and learn a lot of things in the future thanks to you and your team.

And thanks for the "freedom of posting" anywhere I wish, this is unfortunately not tolerated on a lot of internet boards. ^^

We'd definitely be interested in that. I've come across just one line from the French version of the movie, but found it to be both witty and hilarious. It goes something like "Vous perdez votre sang froid ma chère, c'est très mauvais pour un reptil!" which I think means "You lose your cool my dear, it's very bad for a reptile!"

I'm not sure who says it, but it seems like something Koopa would say to Lena or even Daisy... Any help?

"Freedom of posting" is allowed so long as you feel you have something to contribute. Of course, whether your contribution is truly relevant or not is up to the moderators, so just use your best discretion. :P

Welcome to the board! And yes--I would be delighted if you would sometime write an article or something comparing the two versions. It would be a great addition to the site.

I'll try to do this, but it may require a lot of time. However I have a laptop and I travel by train everyday so I could dedicate half an hour per day to write down this French script, but the problem is the DVD was never released in France and the French version isn't included on my copy. Should I download it? *oops*'

Koopa tells this to Lena indeed, and your French transcription is 100% correct (even if we spell "reptile" actually).

So the French "release" is a bootleg dub, essentially?

Which edition are you talking about?

I'm pretty sure there is no official DVD release in France and perhaps even in zone 2.

Concerning the VHS, of course there is nothing about a bootleg, since it was released in every serious shops and marketplaces in the mid 90s. I purchased both of my editions in the 90s.

Since you said there was no French DVD release I assumed that the dub itself was a bootleg. Completely forgot the VHS, which is a shame since I love that medium.

Anyways, sure, download it if you like. The process as you described it seems like it would take a long time so don't feel obligated. We'd really appreciate the help but only do it if you feel up to it and have the time. :P

Well, I don't want to make a promise since I'm not sure I can put my hands on a French version and/or on my own VHS editions very soon.

But I'll try to do my best to contribute.

Welcome to the boards! Always nice to see a face familiar with the best movie of all time.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
