Hello Everyone

Postby shay42 » Thu Jan 20, 2011 7:44 pm

Hey. Just registered.

Shay42. I'm film student born and living in Ireland.
I've been a big fan of the film ever since I saw it on VHS as a kid and now have a Region 2 copy of the DVD (still can't believe it got released on DVD here) as well as having a CD of the soundtrack that my brother got for me for Christmas a few years ago.

Sup?

Welcome to the boards, shay. It's good to have another non-American fan around since you all typically have an interesting perspective on the film. It's widely disliked here in America, but for some reason has a fair amount of appreciation abroad. That's perhaps the reason why it has had regional distribution, particularly those of higher quality than what even we get.

Hope you enjoy the site. There's certainly a lot of information on there for a fan to take in, so feel welcome to post in any topic, no matter how old, you like as long as you feel you have something to contribute. :)

I've just finished reading the Mojo Nixon interview (amazing) so, so far so good.

Yeah, I know a few people who love it but it is a guilty pleasure because some people just don't get it.

What's also another crazy thing about the film (amongst many) is that it has Irish actress Fiona Shaw in it as Lena, Koopa's secretary or whatever they are to each other which is a pretty big role in the film. She stabs Yoshi!

She's in famous Irish films like My Left Foot and The Butcher Boy as well as being in the Harry Potter films!

That actually is pretty crazy. Most people here just think of her as that "English" actress otherwise unnotable save for her role in the Harry Potter movies, so it's interesting to think she's a more known actress to Irish audiences. That probably places a different perspective on her role in Super Mario Bros.

Yeah, that happens too often when an Irish celebrity makes it in the states and is identified as English.

As far as I know she's from Cork. She sometimes does plays in Dublin I think. I remember about a year ago hearing she was doing something like a one-woman show or something.

And in looking her up I just found out she's in True Blood now. That's interesting.

Welcome to the boards! Like Redstar said, it's great to have another non-US member. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the film and all the great content we've posted :D

Welcome aboard, shay! I just joined, too, and adored Fiona Shaw as Lena ever since I saw SMB back in '93. The trouble is, I'm not familiar with her other work (probably because I live in the States), aside from her characters in the Harry Potter films and small role as the hotel employee in Home Alone 2.

I'll definitely be checking out those films you mentioned, though (I believe I did hear something about her being featured in The Butcher Boy many years ago). Though I had no idea she was in True Blood! I have a few friends who watch the show, but have never really seen it for myself. Something tells me Fiona would make a really impressive vampire, if that is indeed the type of character she portrays.

Welcome to the boards! Great to have you on board!
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
