Nooblet From Noobington

Postby mcgriffin » Tue Jan 25, 2011 10:22 pm

Hey dudez. M'name's MC Griffin, I'm an artist, and huge Mario fan. I love the games, but am minorly obsessed with the film, sharing it universally with friends and fellow film lovers as a non-ironic showcase of the visual, graphic potential of film. I used to work at a video store and would frequently recommend it to customers (it and Gremlins 2). Looking forward to sharing the love.

Btw, I've got a few bits of art in the fan art gallery already. This: This Ain't No Game and this: Trust The Fungus

Thanks for joining the forums. I totally dig your fan art, especially Trust The Fungus. I'd love to have a shirt with that on it. Would go perfect with my Thwomp and Roto Disc shirts...

Welcome to the forums. Hope you enjoy this forum. Which I think you already do.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

Hello! When you worked at the video store did you ever put the film on the store's TV for people to watch?

Welcome to the board, McGriffin. It's good to know we'll have you around after being able to showcase your fan art. Both were awesome additions to our gallery, so we were glad to have had your permission for them. Hopefully you'll be able to contribute future work and your thoughts on the film here. :)

I also wrote a brief commentary on your "This Ain't No Game" piece here. Feel free to respond to it there.

More than once! :D Which was especially fun, 'cause it was a specialty video store and catered to the film elitists out here. Really fun to see people's reaction to my genuine enjoyment of the film. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy rubbing my enthusiasm in people's faces.

Welcome! Nice to see ya' recommended it at the Video Store! Most places don't even carry that DVD  Only one Video store carried a rental VHS here, but when DVDs came in, it went out, and never got a DVD replacement..but, it's nice to hear you acknowledged the film and tried to get it some attention! :D

Good for you - I'd have certainly put on SMB and other films I like pretty frequently, if I was working at the store! Sure it's important to accommodate both customer and staff, but again all should learn to appreciate the immense amount of thought and respect that went into creating this and other badly shunned videogame movies - and keep any intense hate (e.g. "How appropriate for Dennis Hopper to die on the day after the anniversary of the release of the sh***y Super Mario Bros. movie!") to themselves, if not stop the intense hate altogether!

Furthermore... if SMB itself is soon to be aired on TV in a specific country, then putting a video and/or DVD of it on at a video store in the run-up to the big day could indeed count as a means of... advertising the upcoming airing, of promoting it and spreading the word about it! You'd be doing your own job and hopefully helping a TV station with theirs (i.e. by hopefully raking in a few viewers for a specific programme) at the same time - most of all as customers would very likely tell any friends about the movie soon being aired! And of course putting on any Mario music CDs (whether the Super Mario Land single, the OST for any Mario games or even the movie soundtrack) or setting up any Mario games -whether for store display/demo purposes, or even for customers to play if the store allows so- could also add to the 'advertisement', and setting an obviously much-needed good mood :P; also if the store would let you wear any Mario regalia (T-shirts, pin badges etc.) with your store uniform then this would also help.

And what if SMB was to be aired around the time of when a new Mario game is soon to be released? My above suggestion would also help to 'advertise' both - it could even increase interest and sales in the game/s! You should definitely consider all of this if you ever work at the video store again, or if you at least visit it some time.

Hello, mcgriffin, and welcome to the boards! I had a look at your art a few days ago, and I must say, you're a terrific artist! "This Ain't No Game" really captures the essence of SMB, and "Trust the Fungus" is just adorable (in a deadly kind of way, of course).

Like Star Ma'am, I commend you for playing the movie at the video store where you used to work. Not only is it a great way to attract more fans, but to get people to realize that there's more to the movie world and special effects than CGI.

What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
