4/17/92 (Sci-Fi--Solomon/Rowe) Script Discussion

Has anyone heard much more about this draft? Do we have a scanned copy on one of our hard-drives? I think this should be uploaded along with the "rainbow" draft.

As I said in one of the other script topics, we do have the full version of this script scanned and ready to be shared on the site. The hold-up is that there's a chance we could interview Ed Solomon himself, so we want to wait until we know for sure. Hope that makes it worth the wait!

This script seems to be extremely close to the finished film and I think we can gain a vast amount of insight from it by reading the "deleted scenes" and eventually comparing them with the director's cut (which I'm sure we're going to get...I'm an optimist) and deleted scenes and other bits taken from the finished film/cut we know of.

You'd be surprised. This script is actually the original shooting script; it was rewritten by Ed himself several times before he left the project and Rocky/Annabel and the cast started to just improvise. After that, Parker and Terry returned and started their own revisions.

So, the script is actually pretty solidly different once the adventure picks up and moves into the parallel world. It's largely the same in terms of structure, but the differences quickly add up and result in a completely different climax and ending.

It's a completely different ending than say... the Bennett/Runte draft and the la Frenais/Clement drafts?

Yeah, I doubt the writer of such Blockbusters as "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" and "Men In Black" is going to do an interviewing regarding "Super Mario Bros..." But, maybe he will! But it's mentioned the ending of this script is completely different than the movie-- is it also completely different than the endings of the Bennett/Runte draft and la Frenais/Clement drafts? I'm curious to know what the ending would have looked like had they not ended it on a cliffhanger or with the other scripts' endings. Either way, it's an exciting time to be a "Super Mario Bros." movie fan! We're moving up, slowly but surely...

I believe Phlibbit was saying that, yes, they're is a completely different ending, but not to get your hopes up about it being good. Because it's not.

The interview with Ed Solomon is still a likely chance, so get your hopes up for that if you want!

Yeah, I'm guessing by this point in script writing process they hadn't come up with a clever ending yet. Personally, I would have ended it with Mario and Luigi staying behind in the Mushroom Kingdom to be the heroes of that world.

Has this shooting script ever been fully transcribed for upload yet? I've always been very interested in seeing the entire shooting script! I've read all of the earlier scripts posted. The shooting script holds the key to most or all of the scenes that were filmed and then removed. Those extra 30 minutes or so that the editor spoke about in his interview are probably contained here.

This isn't that particular script-- this was another draft that had several extreme differences that were never shot. I've read this one and it's not very good.

Ah! Has the shooting script, or one as close to it, ever been found?

By now, we doubt that there ever WAS a real "Shooting Script"! Many of the actors were tired of having to go through the "Recent rewrite" of the week that they just said "screw it" and just did their scenes off the top of their heads.

I would probably call the "shooting script" whatever version of the script was they used on the final day of shooting after completing whatever revisions there were that day.

We do have several scripts not currently available on the site which we have been meaning to publish. They are all transcribed, so I will see about getting them up tomorrow. Look for them then!

I have updated the Scripts page with the Solomon/Rowe "Disney" shooting script. The script itself is available in PDF format. A detailed synopsis will be provided soon, although I'm sure everyone will be giving it a read before that happens.
