GameCube (GCN) Discussion/Recommendations

Postby Wesr » Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:45 pm

Thanks to my folks giving me 25.00 with amazon and a loan of 21.00 until friday and my aunt sending me 20.00 I was able to score a Metroid Prime gamecube. I wish I'd kept my old one but I wasn't impressed with it when I first got it sadly. Still 65.00 shipped i didn't think was too bad. Any games I must have? I plan on getting as many as i can since they're cheap compared to other ones.

I highly recommend Super Mario Sunshine and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Sunshine is a very underrated Super Mario game. Yes, the FLUDD is a gimmick, but it's a fun one that offers just as much versatility in your movements as Mario's usual acrobatics do. The voice-acting and story are very experimental for the franchise and due to the game's poor reception neither were really attempted again. The game just stands out as one of the most innovative in the series, with only the two Galaxy games standing greater.

The Wind Waker is just one of the most creative and fun entries in the series. Only the recent Skyward Sword revolutionizes the property even more.

I'm sure others can add more on these games and others. Enjoy your new system! :D

I'm going to try and get all the games i can. I really wish nintendo had stayed with no regional blocks for games like they did with the original gameboy games on all their systems. So many great games never made it over here. I'm for sure getting metroid prime 2 and some accessories as i saw a gameboy player accessory on the Gamecube wiki. I just realized Windwalker was one of the first games I got for it along with Final fantasy crystal chronicles. That's when I realized the new link wasn't as cool as the original and that square had lost its touch with final fantasy games.

Dunno if you're a Star Wars fan but Rogue Squadron 2: Rebel Strike was (and still is) very good. The graphics were really good, it felt like you were playing a movie. A little on the short side but its got a lot of replay value.

I recommend 4 games. Luigi's Mansion, Wario's World, Star Fox Assault, and Mario Kart Double Dash.

Luigi's Mansion is quite underrated for 2 reasons. One, it's too short and 2, it's incredibly easy. While these are pretty justifiable arguments I don't think these flaws ruin the game. In fact I think that's why it's really good. The gameplay is good but it can be very.Tiring after a while so it's wise Nintendo made it so short.

Wario World is another gem people don't seem real fond of. It's a simple action beat em up with monsters, kick ass moves, and some Tim Burton inspired scenery. This one's also short and unlike Luigi's Mansion, this one had more potetional to become longer.

Star Fox Assault is a fun action game worthy of the Star Fox name. This is also one of the very few Nintnedo franchise games to have voice actung in it. Too bad it's not all that great.

Mario Kart Double Dash, Holy Hot DAMN was this game fun. To date it's one of the best Mario Kart games of all time.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

I don't dare tell my parents taht i have starfox or mario cart or they'll steal the machine away. My dad would take over my room and play starfox all the time. He did the same for ace combat for the PS1 so i got him a copy to use with the beat up ps2 in the living room

You're probably going to play "burn the heretic" with me because of this, but I very much have to recommend the oft-maligned Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure. It could have and should have been a much better game, but I only recommend it because it has Back to the Future: The Ride as one of the minigames. Well, the "Backdraft" one is quite fun on "hard" mode, too.

I never even heard of it. The BTTF game would make it worth it. Only reason I played Kingdom Hearts 2 on the PS2 was for the Tron area

Get Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. It's a psychological horror akin to the original Resident Evil games or the Silent Hill series. It really stands out as one of the most atmospheric and powerful games for the system.

Just be warned that the game will "fake" a system crash every once in a while to mess with your head. I only spoil this for you because I'm normally very paranoid with technology...it seems to hate me at times.

Thanks for the heads up. I accidentally ordered Metroid prime 2 to only find out it came with the gamecube i ordered so i'll have to return it or trade it at the local store. It's funny how some gamecube games are more than others used. Metal gear, zelda, and some Resident evil games are thru the rough price wise.

No burning here, Prime Evil. I completely agree--pick this game up if you get a chance. The entire experience is actually a bit of a guilty pleasure. It's so odd in structure and execution but it still manages to be fun even when you're picking up pieces of virtual trash in the park. And it's true, the BTTF portion is the only reason I bought the game too--the day it came out.

While I'm at it, I'm going to recommend another gem from Kemco--Batman: Dark Tomorrow. I don't give a crap what anyone else says about this game--it's awesome. The story, cutscenes, and graphics are awesome. The controls/camera are okay once you get used to them.

And finally, I'll put my stamp of approval on Zelda: Wind Waker, WarioWorld, Metroid Prime 1/2, and Eternal Darkness. All must-haves.

I got it for $1.99 at Gamestop.

It's funny, but I do have some concept work I did a few years ago for a Ghostbusters Spooktacular minigame. Now seems as good a time as any to post it here...not professional by any means, just a bit of fanart.

I got the Legend Of Zelda collection yesterday. It's pretty good but it would have been cooler if it had been 2 discs to fit the gameboy and SNES games on it too.

What are a few of my other favorite games? Let's see...

Timesplitters: Future Perfect

Enter the Matrix (interesting even though it was something of a rushed job)

Any of the Bond games, especially Nightfire and Everything or Nothing (I include the latter as a part of the film canon)

The Sonic games* (sorry, Serum!)

(*As an aside, I'd love to see the "burger joint" couple from the first "Adventure" game to get their own spinoff series, like the Nescafe ads.)

I actually had the ps2 version of Enter the matrix. I can't believe how pricey some gamecube games are.

People are realizing too late that the GameCube had some really good titles, though I think older games in general generally fetch a good price. There's just so much demand.

Resident Evil and Metal gear are getting a pretty good price for them. I just ordered a WII and i'm shocked how cheap some of teh games are. I can't even get 360 games this cheap.

It's been said that the Gamecube version was the best of all the ports, because it was split up onto 2 discs. Still annoying to have to swap out discs at the end, though.

My copy was $12.88 at Sam's Club when I got it in 2005/6.

What can you guys tell me about Double Dash!!? My brother highly recommends it and it seems like a good party title that my inexperienced girlfriend could get into, but I'd like to hear what makes it fun.

Please keep in mind that I love Mario Kart 64 to death since it's just so perfect in its simplicity. Comparisons to that would really give me an idea of what to look out for.

I haven't played it in years, but I remember thinking it was just okay. It's definitely much better than Mariokart Wii, however. The two-player kart setup is pretty unique.

My main problem with the game is that it felt too slow, like the carts just weren't going fast enough, and some of the tracks seemed way too wide making the whole game feel easier/dumbed down. However, that might be to your advantage if you're planning on playing it with your girlfriend :)

It's terrible. It's popular because Mario is in it, but seriously any knock-off third party racing title has waaay better driving mechanics than this piece of garbage. It had an interesting gimmick with the dual-driver thing, which I actually really liked. But when the controls are abysmal (Like having cubes for wheels) and the overall style of the thing isn't great (Not to mention even for the time the graphics were horrendous. I remember picking it up all excited on release day, putting it in and going 'WTF is this rubbish?'). The battle mode wasn't as good as the 64 version, due to not feeling the hit - in 64 when you smacked someone you felt satisfaction - and the other additional modes were very missable.

Overall a popular game because it's Mario, and you put his face on anything (Except a movie it seems) and it will sell and be 'OMG like the best game evah!'. Mario Kart 64 was great, Mario Kart Wii is good and Double Dash had a refreshing idea but very poorly executed. I would say avoid, but it's not as if a bunch of raging Mario fans are really gonna listen to that advice is it? XP

lol. I'm just as guilty. I bought Sonic the Hedgehog 06 despite it being an epic crapbag of a game. Superb music (Maybe some of the best in video gaming) wrapped around one of the most glitchy and horrendous gameplay experiences you'll ever have the misfortune of being exposed to. I'm a Sonic fan, I bought it. :p If you're a Mario fan, I assume you'd be similar.

I guess I get annoyed by people who praise badly made games as some sort of Godsend just because they have a particular face on them, and Double Dash is one of the leading examples. Mario Kart Wii is slightly better, I think, but I can't tell if that's just cos the bad controls are expected because it's using Wii controls (Which are dodgy at the best of times). From any angle on it, it's a pretty terrible game with a very interesting and sadly wasted gimmick that I so wanted to be excellent and it fell short of the mark by too long a distance.

Bit hard to explain how controls are bad. They were sluggish, inaccurate, unresponsive at times. It can't be my controller, as these issues never occurred in any other game I played using the same one. In fact I'm a bit of a legend in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so the controller must work slick to keep up with the speed of that game.

Opinions are tricky things though, I guess :p

Well, I've ordered it online for under $10. The price is fair enough to try it out. Phlibbit's comments made me feel wary about the game, but were enough to make me want to give it a chance.

If you want to see Luigi hanging himself play Luigis Mansion go to the phone room, answer it, wait for lightning to strike, and you can clearly see the shadow of Luigi hanging himself on the wall.

Okay, how about Crash Nitro Kart? I recall playing the original Crash Team Racing on the PS1 and finding it far equal to if not much more fun than Mario Kart 64, but it seems like the sequel wasn't as well received. Still looks pretty fun.

I also hands-down recommend The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (which yes I also have for the PS2). Dress up Idrial, Morwen, Berethor et al for some Balrog-bashing fun!

If, like me, you are a Vega fan and you really hate Balrog due to the evil, fungus-mouthed, well-overdue-to-be-de-evolved boxer committing the mother of all Vega-hate offenses in their ending in Street Fighter X Tekken... then yes I highly recommend even going so far as to play the Lord of the Rings games (btw, from this I now even have two lovely One Ring replicas which yes both make such lovely jewellery). The Third Age is one of my favourites because I have a thing for dressing up player characters - I ain't the only one who strongly feels, even in fiction it's important to take pride in your appearance

Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine have always been favorites at my house! Same with basically any Mario sport game. I have also spent countless hours meeting with folks and building a life in Animal Crossing.

Again being anti-Balrog, I would also recommend the Gamecube versions of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Oh the joy of Balrog-bashing!

Return of the King is actually significant as mom and I went to see the movie the night before I sadly lost my furbaby Zelda in January 2004  - but in her place we had the beautiful Crystal :)
