Wreck-It Ralph

Who else is looking forward to this movie? I haven't been excited for upcoming movies for a long time, but it's looking like 2012 will see the release of quite a bit of creative properties from every studio. Disney itself seems to be modernizing itself by approaching a topic like video games through its upcoming animated film Wreck-It Ralph.

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade.

Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it's "Game Over" for the entire arcade?

This reminds me a lot like Wrecking Crew. Though I dunno if I'll see it I'm not fond on CG Disney movies.

I was doing research on the film and found out this will be like Roger Rabbit of video game movies. Apparently, Bowser, Eggman(I prefer Dr. Robotnic), pac man ghost and a few other game villains will be in this. Here's hoping a Mario Bros cameo with Charles Martinez voicing them, and many other VG characters. I'd like to see this movie do good and maybe have Disney or another CG company make a new Mario Bros animated CG movie. I know I said I don't care for CG movies, but I would love to see a CG animated Mario movie.

Going by the hero/villain dynamic, arcade artwork and the skyscraper theme I think it takes more from the original Donkey Kong, though I'm sure the inspirations will be much deeper than that.

I love Roger Rabbit so much. No film or media has ever replicated the same sort of charm since, though we've surely seen it tried time and again online with video game characters. If the rights issue could be cleared up then I really think this is the perfect opportunity to bring classic and latter-day video game characters together in the most respectful way.

I'm also usually against CG animated films (there was no reason Rapunzel had to be CG) but this is really the right subject matter for it. As a meta, existentialist work we could really have a lot of fun with seeing the film develop visually.

Are there any trailers to this movie yet?

There unfortunately aren't yet, though they did just release a teaser poster:

I'm calling it now--SMB 20th Blu-ray day and date with the blu-ray release of this film. It makes perfect sense and it makes you wonder, to what extent SMB game characters will be in that film.

A re-release coinciding with Mario's 20th also made perfect sense.

For the film but not disney. Here it's the film's 20th and they have a video game related film coming out.

I'm sure it's all just a coincidence, if Disney really cared about the movie it would have already been re-released in proper format, or they would announce plans for its 20th anniversary release.

According to /Slash Film, Wreck-It Ralph will definitely feature "Roger Rabbit" style cameos from classic video game characters.

The released line-up includes:

* Bowser from Super Mario Bros.
* Doctor Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog
* Kano from Mortal Kombat
* A Ghost from Pac-Man
* Zangief from Street Fighter
* Coily the Snake from Q*bert

OH MY GOD THIS is like VIDEOGAME THE MOVIE. RAPLH IS MARIO. Wow that is Awesome. Yeah I'd love to see this and I would hope the persuades disney to re-release a full version of the mario bros movie.

Show disney your interest in this and it could possibly encourage the re-release of a extended cut of SMB. I watched Red Cliff Which is a 5 hour war epic. I can watch a long movie.

We finally have not only some more promotional images but also a trailer!

Many of the nods and jokes are done very well, even if it doesn't yet look like it'll come together in a polished fashion. One can only hope that there's real cinematic value here with a satisfying ending (Ralph getting his own spin-off a la Donkey Kong Country?) My only complaint is Silverman's presence as she's a person I just cannot stand.

I watched this earlier it looks fantastic. I do agree about Silverman though, her voice irritated me. I guess they can't make a CG cartoon without one annoying kid character. She's probably based on a video game character but not sure which one.

Dr. Wily, who was seen in earlier pics, is missing entirely. Probably because Capcom ordered it to be so. After all, they're trying to bury Mega Man.

I think it looks pretty cool. It's an interesting concept. It's cool how they have the Pac-Man ghost and Bowser in there, too.

I am totally hyped for this movie now?

I definitely want to see this when it comes out! Finally Disney are doing a movie specially for us gamers - Captain N: The Game Master, eat your heart out!

And yes, if the Fix-it Felix Jr. game existed I would love to give it a try :mrgreen:

I'm sure they'll make one for xboxlive/psn/and the wiiware or whatever they will call it for the WiiU. It'd be cool if they made an 8bit arcade one to download and a real game based on the movie of a video game into a video game.

This film is looking fantastic. Hopefully it'll do what Roger Rabbit did for incorporating multiple generations of cartoon characters in one film, but only for videogame characters. There's a great opportunity here for this film to speak to the last 25 years of videogame culture.

If you want to see any future video game film adaptations--especially something from Disney--I think it will be very important that this film be successful. Like I've been saying, if this movie makes bank at the box office, I really think we'll finally get an SMB blu-ray when this film is released on the format.

Ralph is... Mario?

Huh... I saw him more as Donkey Kong, if anyone.

Anyway, a Super Mario Bros. re-release with some promotional stuff on the disc for this movie would be a neat idea.

That is strange, maybe he meant Felix was Mario. Which still doesn't seem right.

Yes. It's like how Mario was conceived as an Everyman for Nintendo's games: he was a carpenter in "Donkey Kong," a plumber in "Mario Bros./SMB," a (bad) physician in "Dr. Mario," a golfer in, erm, "Golf," the tennis announcer in "Tennis," and anything else you can think of.

Here, Wreck-it Ralph's trying on all sorts of different genres for size.

^Totally. Stuff like that is what will make this movie nostalgic for a lot of people. Just like you'd have obscure or antiquated characters in Roger Rabbit or some vintage toys in Toy Story 3. It wouldn't make sense for them to use "new" designs on a lot of these characters because it probably wouldn't fit with the story and your average moviegoer wouldn't know which is "new" or "old" enough for the studio to choose. So I'm totally digging it so far.

Would have been cool and funny if Dennis Hopper were still alive (RIP) and they got him to play the voice of Bowser in this movie.

Could you imagine VG Bowser with his voice :lol:

They would ask. It would've been an interesting cameo opportunity, not to mention it would tie into celebrating video game-related nostalgia. Plus remember Hopper had been in at least one CG animated film before his death--he may have been open to a small bit in this one.

That's a pretty cool promo, really. I got to around level 10 or so before I paused it. Maybe I'll pick it back up later. It's a cool tie-in and I like that they're at least putting forth an effort into making the "world" of this film a reality.

No, I don't think so. Bowser's "look" is more suited to someone like BRIAN BLESSED. Or Tim Curry even.

What I find most interesting is that Disney was able to license characters from Nintendo, which must have taken a lot of negotiating and bargaining. So far we've only seen Bowser, which is a great addition, but I'm very curious if Mario or at least other characters from the property will make appearances.

What does this mean? Well, if the film is received well then perhaps Nintendo would trust Disney for future adaptations. Even just Pixar-style shorts would be amazing.

It would be nice, but I have a feeling that he might only detract from the story just by being too "big" of a presence. This morning I thought, "Why don't they have Donkey Kong in there?" but realized that A) Ralph's the Donkey Kong character, and B) he's a hero in his own right these days.

Adding to this, I also want to point out that Felix is essentially a Mario expy; he has the same round, bulbous nose and "everyman" demeanor.

Plus, in that scene, it's a group of video game villains that are having an intervention-type of thing. Still, it would be a shame if that scene is the only one where we see "real" video game characters.

If Nintendo let Disney use Bowser, Mario shouldn't be that far off, IMO. It'd be the equivalent of when in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? when you see Mickey Mouse at the end.

I want to say that 100% of the characters seen in the "terminal" portion of the film are real video game characters. There's certainly interaction with them outside of the round-table meeting. I've even heard from those who were able to watch advance screenings that Sonic has a brief cameo.

I just read that the video game adaption of this movie will be exclusively for Wii, DS and 3DS. Probably because of Boowser, maybe he'll be in the game.

^That's probably not the reason, FYI.

I think it's that the target demographic for this film (kids aged 5-12) are most likely to purchase the game on those platforms. The Wii will probably be the biggest seller with DS close behind. Also developing the game on the Xbox 360 and PS3 opens up a bigger set of problems for a development team trying to do the other versions in terms of development time and team size. I'd venture a guess that the dev team on this doesn't have a whole lot of time to get the game done so they're probably focusing on the platforms they'll make the most money on.

Still, I'm very interested to see just how many video game characters from other companies make it into the game, or whether they'll be limited to a few and have to focus on the original content in the movie.

A toy preview reveals as many as ten new characters in the same vein as Silverman's Vanellope von Schweetz, suggesting a fair portion of the film may be set in the Sugar Rush game. This fills me with trepidation.
