Zentertainment is reporting that the "Super Mario Bros" might be headed back to the big screen. Surprising, considering their first foray in cinema was a much slammed flop. A scooper says "Nintendo is banking on bringing America’s favorite plumber back to the silver screen in a live action/CGI film. This film will be more faithful to the game storyline and will have less darker elements than the 1993 flop from Hollywood Pictures. Nintendo execs hope to get Marilyn Manson to either have a cameo or play one of the Koopa cousins.

...I'm not sure how putting Marilyn Manson in a movie about the Mario Bros would make it less dark, especially given that the dude's alter ego is "Antichrist Superstar," but I would be interested in seeing him play a villain in a sequel/remake to the movie, especially if and because they would be following the darker, grittier tone of the movie. Of course, given that this article is from nine years ago, we can probably safely assume it's defunct...

I think if they were going to go the route of the movie, with the dark, Blade Runner elements and the horrors of de-evolution it would work, but not for a more kid-friendly version. I know that for instance, Manson begged his friend Tim Burton to play Willy Wonka in the remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," but they went with a much more marketable Johnny Depp instead-- though every ounce of my being wants now to see Marilyn Manson as Willy Wonka singing the songs sung by Gene Wilder in the original movie.

I'm personally a big admirer of Depp's work and his wide range of personalities for all of his characters. Marilyn as Wonka would personally have completely turned me off to seeing the re-make.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like Johnny Depp a lot. I just don't think he was right for Willy Wonka.

As for Marilyn Manson playing a character in a sequel to the movie, I could see it. He could play one of the more obscure Mario villains...like the Piranha Plant Queen. Or Queen Valentina. Or Queen Koopa-- you see where I'm going with this, the dude's a sweet transvestite.

I could see him the most as Queen Koopa myself.

I'm not sure if we should really believe that. I just really don't know what to say without seeing the original source. This is just a very confusing thing to consider, though I appreciate you sharing it with us.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Casting Marilyn Manson in any role doesn't sound like a smart move, though it's certainly an interesting one.

Say what you will about Manson, personally I'm a fan of his music and even if you don't like him he knows how to work a crowd like nobody's business.

As far as Mario goes, I don't really know. If I had been the one to make the Dragonball movie (which was TERRIBLE) I'd have cast him as Frieza.

I decided to do some more digging after coming across an article on a Polish website from 2002 that mentioned this rumor. After some brief persistence, I finally found a direct link to the supposed ZENtertainment article that produced this rumor.

Word that Nintendo is hoping to put out a sequel to the 1993 film SUPER MARIO BROS.

There ya go; it was an unverified write-in rumor that somehow found ground and began to circulate on the early references-unnecessary Internet. Still, an interesting one at that.

Marlyin Masnon would tottaly have to drop his satanic goth gimmick if Disney wanted to hire him for SMB 2. Then again this rumor is obviously false, i remember a similar rumor of a sequel to the Van Damme Street Fighter movie with Dolph Lundren replacing Raul Julia.

That's actually a pretty cool rumor! I would have liked to see that happen.
