SMB Mentioned in Biography Channel’s Special

Postby Kamdan » Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:05 pm

The film was mentioned when the documentary talked about how The Santa Clause was going to be a Hollywood Pictures production. The production executive of Hollywood Pictures, Charles Hirschhorn, talked about how great their first production, Arachnophobia, but went on to say how terrible their other films were, including Super Mario Bros. and Son-in-Law. That really rubbed me the wrong way, since Arachnophobia wasn't as great as Hirschhorn made it out to be. Sounds like he was being a suck up to Spielberg, who was involved with Arachnophobia. I was wondering how everyone else felt, since I paid to see Super Mario Bros. in the theater and fondly remember watching Son-in-Law and Encino Man, another Hollywood Pictures film, and enjoyed them.

I'm sure the reason he bashes Super Mario Bros. and the other films didn't make them much money and weren't critically acclaimed, even if films like SMB have become cult classics in the years since.

A movie's success is usually always determined by how much money it made or is now making. Many films that did poorly, but are cult classics that *now* make money were just "misunderstood" or "undermarketed." In such cases you always have people who worked on those films saying how they all "knew" it was more than expected and did amazing things. If it was just an utter failure then they won't praise it as much.

I think that's something you can really see in our interviews. Just knowing that there's fans out there gives these people reason to admit that there were things to enjoy on the production. If the execs just knew that they'd probably praise Super Mario Bros. too.

Also, I do enjoy Son-In-Law and Encino Man, even if I don't think they're particularly amazing films. Paulie Shore was actually performing in my area just last week. I wanted to get him to sign my copy of A Goofy Movie so bad. xD

Say what thou whilst, I like Pauly Shore.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Return to “Super Mario Bros.”
