Yeah, I've been seeing these comments on a lot of sites. This was even the general consensus back when some footage was shown at Comic-Con. Twitter right now is essentially "trending" the topic. Hundreds of tweets of people saying/re-tweeting the same thing. Crazy how everyone remembers the Goombas that much. :P

if you look at him from the upper lip up it looks like they reused the Goomba mold from the SMB movie, only thing different is the mouth.

And whoever said the "Super Mario Bros." movie wasn't an influential film is now kicking themselves. Because that's a Goomba if I've ever seen one.

My only regret is that only me and the couple dozen other members on this board are going to recognize that. But, that's what makes us superior.

I had apparently missed this meme, but upon seeing The Amazing Spider-Man, I've come to say The Lizard looks even less believable than the Goombas. Then again, I find it odd that this movie started reminding me of Super Mario Bros. the Movie by sharing a lot of its mistakes, trying to be dark and light without the proper setup. While on many technical aspects, TASM is a better movie, found the story itself somewhat soulless.

Super Mario Bros. The Movie at least did have a decent pace going for it, and was more imaginative than the reboot of Spider-Man.

You would think that people seeing the Lizard in the film itself would cause any comparisons to the Goombas to die down, but it really hasn't. Twitter continues to be filled with such jokes daily.

now that i got a better look at him, i would say he looks more like a de-evolved Koopa

I walked out on the new "Spider Man" movie, and came back in for the last fifteen minutes and found him battling Koopa. I couldn't leave the theater because it was a midnight screening, so I spent most of my time in the lobby telling the people about the Mario movie and the "Phantasm" series. But yeah, the resemblance is uncanny.

that was my first impression, too
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

I see more of a resemblance to Koopa's face when he first begins to de-evolve near the end.

He would have fit right in with the Goombas.

Now they're saying the new live action Ninja Turtles look like Goombas.
I love the look of the movie Goombas, and can see why it's well remembered all these years later.

I'm not sure I'd call them 'live action,' but if that's what counts as practical effects these days I guess I'll just film my next movie entirely in front of a green screen... But this just further proves my theory that the Super Mario Bros. movie is the central junction point of all of cinema.

I'm not sure if these constant comparisons to the Super Mario Bros. movie are positive or negative.

Surely it indicates something that the film is so embedded in pop culture that any slight film similarity reminds people of it.
