Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't "Super Mario Bros." shortlisted for Oscars for best set-design and best make-up? It lost to the other dinosaur movie that came out that year-- which I refuse to say the name of. :|
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

I remember it being nominated for a saturn award but not an oscar.I certainly don't remember it losing to Jurassic Park. :?
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

I didn't say it was "nominated" for an Oscar, I meant rather was it shortlisted for an Oscar nomination.

Super Mario Bros. was shortlisted for a special effects Oscar, but Disney lobbied hard to have A Nightmare Before Christmas entered into that category. As at the time only three films could be eligible per category this pushed Super Mario Bros. out.

It was, however, nominated for Best Costume and Best Make-Up Saturn Awards. Didn't win either, though if Disney hadn't cut the dino-humans for being "too creepy" it might have at least won Best Make-Up.

That's odd that they would go out on a limb for a then-unknown franchise instead of pushing the Oscar nomination for a movie based on basically the biggest franchise in the world.

Tim Burton though, innit. Anything he creates is considered a golden turd ripe for sale. And if I'm honest, most of his stuff is meh at best. Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish and Demon Barber of Fleet Street excepted of course.

But Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Alice in Wonderland, Batman... well, to say most of his library is standard fare is an understatement. Tim Burton probably demanded Nightmare Before Christmas be put as special effects and not animation to satisfy his retarded ego.

You forgot Planet of the Apes. Personal favorite only because of the makeup effects and costume design.

But, you're right; Burton is a hack. His films have had little substance for some time as he seems to be going bigger than he should. I'd be curious of a Beetlejuice-era Burton take on Super Mario Bros., but anything more recent would lack as much heart as Alice in Wonderland.
