Did Anyone Else Catch This Bit of Irony?

Postby LyanRai » Sun Jul 15, 2012 4:24 pm

Daisy, a product of evolution from dinosaurs, was left on the steps of a Catholic church whose theology is based on creation. I saw this and said "I see what you did there".

Maybe it is just me, but I catch some of the most unusual things when I watch a movie.

Now, to be fair, I do believe Pope John Paul II (or, heaven forbid, the new one) said a while back that evolution/natural selection was not entirely incompatible with Christianity and Catholicism...

Also, there are branches of Christianity that are far worse about the evolution thing than the Catholic Church. 8)

Also also, I don't think there's anything to be read in Daisy being left by a church. This was before the Safe Haven thing, remember--Daisy's mother probably just thought it was the safest place to leave her.

You know, people often suggest that Christians may be offended by the evolutionary theme of the film, though it never occurred to me just how metaphorical this small moment in the film really is towards that issue.

I'd have to agree with Prime Evil, though, that Catholicism is a much different breed of religion from the other Christian faiths. Catholicism, while bogged down by centuries of dogma, is remarkably more openminded about such issues than the relatively young Protestant branches. I believe they have accepted evolution on some level.

The movie doesn't deal with evolution nearly as much as it deals with mutation, or as it's referred to in the film, "de-evolution," although such a miracle is disproven by science.

But, as an existentialist, I don't believe in science. There is only the Super Mario Bros. movie.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
