What made you think differently?

Postby IbanezJFS » Fri Jul 27, 2012 3:02 am

How many of you people who saw it for the first time in theaters were open minded and still liked it? As for everyone else...What made you turn around and made you more open minded to the film?

See for me I never saw it when it first came out. I was never really a social kid. I loved Nintendo but I wasn't much of a nerd yet. But I was introduced to independent cinema early in my life thanks to my step Dad. He showed me the toxic avenger and at first I hated it. But then he told me how your suppose to see it and keep your mind open about it. That's when I started seeing movies in a different way.

But I still didn't see the movie till about.....5 weeks ago. Don't know why it just never popped into my head until then. Luckily it was on youtube so I sat down and watched it from start to finish.......And it was great. And as much of a geeky nerdy little fan boy I am. I think it's also very important to put your pride to the side. Because people not being open is whats causing a lot of people (Actors, writers, producers, prop guys, etc). to miss out on jobs and money. And I learned a bad movie, tv show, or album etc. Hurts a series/franchise BUT ONLY IF YOU LET IT!

Hmm, I don't know if I'd go so far as to compare "Super Mario Bros." to "The Toxic Avenger," though in a way they are sort of similar in their silliness. However, I think Mario Bros. takes itself a whole lot more seriously than the Toxic Avenger films.

But I think that since I'd never played any other Mario games other than "Mario 64" when I first saw the film, I assumed the earlier games were like the movie and I was disappointed when I found out that the games were nothing like the movie.

So in a way, the movie had the reverse effect on me that it has on so many people who wanted the movie to be more like the games-- I wanted the games to be more like the film. I think that's why I like the movie so much.

Well what I mean by the toxic avenger movie was when I saw it. My step dad said to keep an open mind. And I used that on all other films. It wasn't meant to be a direct comparison.

I don't think anyone goes into a movie called "The Toxic Avenger" with an open mind, ha ha. But yeah, you should keep an open mind on any film, unless it has the title "Transformers: (Insert Dumb Subtitle): A Film by Michael Bay."

I think I was way to young to have an open mind when I saw this in theaters. All I cared about was my favorite video game characters brought to life on the big screen.

I think 1 other thing that made me see this film differently is because of my autism. Now please don't think im playing some disability card to win this contest going on. But you will notice that people with Autism or at least Asperger's syndrome tend to think in different ways. And I think that helped.

I've always been open-minded towards creative interpretations. It's only when the changes are completely bizarre and unnecessary in an otherwise exact adaptation that I get really upset. If you want to change the core themes and backstory of a particular work you might as well go all out.

I think time has also played a crucial factor in the turn around of this movie. The hype is for the most part over. This movie was made the peak of its popularity. But now that it's been almost 20 Years people can view it with a not so clouded mind.

Finding a Koopa action figure at a local comic store made me revisit this film, and I found I had been disliking it based on other peoples perceptions and not giving it a fair chance. Now it's one of my favorites.

Nothing ever made me 'think twice' about the movie-- I loved it from the start and am probably the only person in recorded history who still stands by the question: "Why can't the video-games be all gritty and cool with the cyberpunk stuff from that was in the movie?"
