Similarities between SMB Super Show and the SMB movie?

Postby Reptile-Queen-Daisy » Fri Dec 07, 2012 3:19 am

I wondered if anyone else had noticed similarities between the two. I can't remember any myself off the bat, but I do seem to recall an episode where Mario and Luigi were trying to get back to Brooklyn. Slight similarity or just me?

It was probably just you, to be honest. The movie and cartoon are very different properties and any similarities was probably coincidental.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

The similarities would be IMO, start when we first see the bros. When it show's the apt they live at, and fade to Mario on the phone saying Mario Bros Plumbing, no leak to small. Where as in the SMBSS, they would say different pick up lines a lot. Most noteworthy one would be, Mario Bros Plumbing, you clog em we clear em. Also in the cartoon their last names were also Mario. So the movie isn't the one that came up with it, it was actually the Super Show.

Well, I think the only major similarity is they both feature the Mario Brothers...
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

The brothers in both the live-action segments of the TV series and the theatrical movie resided in Brooklyn.

Also, they both make use of sound effects from the NES games (that goes without saying, really), although it's more prevalent in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, both cartoon and live-action. That's actually something I would have liked a bit more of in the movie-- everytime the goombas shot a "fireball", I played the sound effect in my head.

I smiled whenever they escaped the Boom-Boom bar: as the stomper boots launch them outside, the "death" sound effect from Super Mario Bros. (NES) is played, and if you've watched the Super Show!, you know they loved that one. It's a great, comical sound, and almost impossible to annunciate, but believe me, I try.
Whenever something generally unfavorable happens, I play the sound.
See someone stuck on the side of the road as you drive by? Make the death sound. Try it, it's great stress relief.

Seems like my re-edit would be just up your alley, then. </shamelessselfpromotion>

But, I digress. As a child, I hoped that it would be more like the cartoon, mainly because the cartoon was pretty much a true realization of the in-game Mario universe. Yeah, the stories in the episodes were hit-or-miss, but they were fun and innocent--an element I felt that was lacking in the film upon my first viewing of it.
"Hey! You lookin' for this?"
"Give it to me."
"BAH-HAHA!"

"Monkey!"
