CineMassacre (AVGN) Review of Super Mario Bros.

Postby Redstar » Fri May 31, 2013 5:35 pm

Well, it finally happened: the Angry Video Game Nerd of CineMassacre has reviewed the Super Mario Bros. movie in time for the film's 20th anniversary.

The review is actually read good. James provides an overview of the film and its inspirations from the game, ultimately determining that it is an enjoyable experience. He does get a few points wrong, though, such as the suggestion that dinosaurs have nothing to do with the game, but it's a welcome alternative to the Nostalga Critic's attempt.

I can't figure out how to embed the video, so give the link a look and watch it for yourself. Come back and let us know what you think!

Phlibbit should totally post John Leguizamo's greeting as a video response!

He used my Expanded Original Motion Picture Soundtrack cover I made for the Inferno Music Vault. Awesome.

I just watched this today. Overall good and respectful review of the film. I think you can kinda tell that James has a soft spot for it.

Also, I am SO glad he made the connection about how famous comic and hero franchises, like TMNT (1990) and Batman (1989), were brought to a whole new level that we had never seen before when they hit the silver screen. That's how I always viewed Super Mario Bros. I always knew it was going to be different from the games and cartoon, because the same thing happened with those other aforementioned films.

A bit of a boring review. You can tell he was loathed to make an AVGN review of the movie because he likes it, and not just calling it the worst film ever made is some odd social faux pas atm (though surprisingly/not surprisingly this is changing as more people actually watch it).

It was a respectful review, though the presentation lacked any real comedy, which people have come to expect from AVGN. So it was good for its respect of the film, but needed to be treated to more comedy.

I don't think James tries to be comedic in his movie reviews. I think he tried to be a legit reviewer when it comes to movies because that's his main form of media. But I got to give him credit because he was respectful to the film and it's followers and, sure he did mes up a few times like Dinosaurs had nothing to do with Mario Games (Um Reznor HELLO!) and I think calling Yoshi a generic looking dinosaur is a bit of an insult but, at least he gave them props on the animatronics.

As far as being plumbers and how the game touches on that the least although this is true I think they touched up on it enough. Unlike the cartoon which had a bunch of plumber jokes in it. The Movie actually showed them doing what they do best. So yeah it's a fair revue and ill take it over Doug Walker's. People tend to forget that Doug is trying to make jokes not so much be a legit critique and people will just take his word. Not to mention how much he alter's the film with editing to make jokes.

So Jame's review gets two thumbs up/
