What if when the Marios came back to rescue Daisy, they went into the wrong building of Koopa's Tower and Koopa was there waiting for them and said "Sorry, but your princess is in another castle!"
Obviously, it would've required some significant rewriting but it would've been kinda funny.
Just had an idea that would've been cool

Parker Bennett and Terry Runte's original script actually utilized such a plot twist, which would have been very fun.
What they wrote saw Mario and Luigi scaling the tower and bursting into the top floor, only to find themselves in Koopa's propaganda department. They then went to the roof of the tower and blew the radio structure over, making a makeshift bridge to the other tower where they actually would confront Koopa.

Oh, that's cool! I remember the first time I beat Super Mario Bros. 3 and the princess said that, I was like "WHAT?!"
I like most of those old drafts. I think I remember at least hearing of the inclusion of those fire-spitting snakes from Super Mario Bros 2 in the Koopahari Desert sequence. I don't know if they actually filmed it or not though. I'm pretty sure in the Rowe/Solomon draft they had a carnivorous plant, which I thought was cool.
Ed Solomon's one of my favorite screenwriters in general, always has such strange stories and funny dialogue. Charlie's Angels was OK as it was, but I'm pretty sure John August rewrote it on them and knowing Ed Solomon's other work, I think it might've been better if they left their draft alone, though I don't know what it was like.

The line of dialogue in question was also in the 1991 "fantasy" script I discovered a few years ago, the words were spoken by Beedleman, aka MagiKoopa.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
