So people like to complain about every detail that the movie "got wrong". (don't know if you noticed, but Luigi doesn't have a moustache!) Among these details is the Mario Bro's outfits. They're not overalls like the game! Can you believe it? And when they do get special duds, it's not untill 3/4 of the way through the movie! What gives?
Personaly, I much prefer the jumpsuits used to the more traditional overalls. Let's face it, we've all seen Mario fans in their homemade costumes (heck, half of us have probably been those fans) and while fun, they look nothing like what a real person, let alone plumber, would wear. The movie jumpsuits look more authentic. More servicable.
Also, Mario's outfit in the games had been constantly changing up to Mario World, so to say that the movie got it wrong is ludicrous at best. And while I too would have enjoyed seeing the bros. in costume for more of the film, story wise I can't fault them. While the suits work well in Dinohattan, they would look like what they are-costumes-in the real world settings. No plumber wears individualy colored outfits on the job.
While the overalls worked fine in the live action portions of the Super Show, that was to compliment a cartoon. For a more realistic production like the movie, the jumpsuits were clearly the way to go. In the end, though, I guess we can all be thankfull they didn't go with the traditional plumbers jeans-and-butt-crack look!

Re: Overalls vs Jumpsuit
People rag on the jumpsuits without stopping to consider whether they, personally, have ever actually seen a plumber or blue collar worker in overalls. It's just not common now, if it ever even was.
Now, most modern blue collar workers do wear jumpsuits. It was a forward-thinking translation for the film. Good call.

sometimes people doesn't understand that fantasy elements dont' work well on a film, hence the realistic aproach; a literal translation would make the film too chessy. that's the same for the jumpsuits. the problem would be the suits having different colors instead of the trademark red and green
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

But most of the film was set in Dinohattan, so maybe it would have been nice if they'd gotten them a little sooner after they'd gotten there?
In any case, I've never seen anyone complain about the jumpsuits not looking like the game. Inexplicably to me, it seems that any time I read something about the movie, the jumpsuits are the one thing people seem to think the movie got right, even though (as pointed out) they're not at all like what the Bros. wear anywhere else.
I don't get it and I'd argue the point, but at the same time, I figure it's better to take what you can get for praise when it comes to this.

Haha, you guys are awesome!
LBD, you didn't tell us you were busting out the Mario Movie duds again! You sly devil!
That's a really interesting outfit Carl. I do appreciate that you made the overalls match the sprite of the original NES Super Mario Bros. I don't think I've seen anyone do that before!

I told one of you guys a while back. Decided to go for it one last time. ;P
I really wish I'd been able to do something for Thwomp Stompers, but money and (last I looked) no contributions to the thread kind of left me dead in the water there.
I actually wore it more than I planned to; there was supposed to be a Bad Box Art Mega Man on Saturday, but that hit a big snag and I had to go back to Mario. Which was cool, because I got to pay homage to Bob Hoskins one last time.
By the way, Carl, I don't remember if my wife got a pic of me from that shot; if not, could I use it on my deviantART with credit given (wherever you like)?
