Mario Mania Player's Guide Preview

This here is a preview of the movie from the "Mario Mania" players guide. Many of you may remember this book as being the official Super Mario World guide, with the first 30 pages being dedicated to the history of Mario. One page talks about the Super Show and all those cartoons, with a little corner of the page regarding what you see here: the movie.

I believe this book was released around 1991, probably just after Mario World was released. Notably, this description names Luigi's girlfriend as "Dianna". I'm not an expert on the truckload of scripts they wrote for this film, but to my knowledge there never was a "Dianna" in any of them. Perhaps someone can rain light on this blurb?

That is interesting... I don't believe I know of any version beyond the Jennewein/Parker script that uses a different name than "Daisy" for the Princess (it was Hildegard/"Hildy" in the '91 draft, probably made for connotations with a similar fable about a princess).

Then again, the script was undergoing constant changes so anything's possible, it could have been a simple mistake, someone might have flipped through a script, saw "Daniella" and thought she was the Princess and then when they went to write this piece couldn't recall the name thinking it was "Dianna."

I'm intrigued by the reference to "magic and mayhem" which sounds like they may have had one of the earier fantasy scripts. Of course, for a blurb this size they may have just phoned in a two minute interview and who knows who gave them what info from where. Great find, anyway.

Yeah, we've had a scan of this blurb for a couple years now. Just never found the time or place for it on the site. The probably got the information from an early press release. I wouldn't be surprised if it was for the Drain Man script.

We've really got to get our hands on that draft. I'm considering merging this thread with the "Barry Morrow First Draft" thread, but I'm gonna have to see where this goes, first.
