Official Props/Costumes Thread

Postby moviemaker29 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:23 am

So I created this thread to see if we could compile everyone's knowledge of the whereabouts of props and costumes that still exist from the SMB film. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of items were destroyed after principle photography ended on the film, but there are items that have popped up occasionally.

Here's what I know of:

Lena's Dress - This was the dress Fiona Shaw wore throughout the last part of the film
http://www.yourprops.com/view_item.php?movie_prop=20283

Police Helmet - One of the police helmets worn by an extra
http://www.yourprops.com/view_item.php?movie_prop=12143

I believe the above items were sold by Screen Used.com. They have a few extra pics in the archive section of their site: http://www.screenused.com

Police Uniform - One of the police uniforms worn by an extra
http://www.propstore.com/products.htm?m ... PerPage=15

A few years ago I saw one of the Fry Guy Flamethrower Guns go up for sale on eBay though I'm not sure it was authentic - I believe this may be the same gun on this page (scroll almost to the bottom):
http://www.movieprop.com/scifiweaponcol ... olinks.htm

The only other item I can think of was one of the blue Solid Foam Latex Stomper Boots that sold on eBay 9 years ago. I believe it went to France... No other leads on that item since then.

And that's all I know of...
So if anyone knows of other items still around, it'd be cool to post any info below. Here are some items that might still be around:

Bob-ombs
Stomper Boots (Hero Boots, Foam Latex Running Boots, Solid Foam Latex Set Piece Boots) (Many of these were destroyed after filming, but not all of them)
"The Rock" Meteorite Necklace (Hero Necklace w/ Leather Strap, Meteorite Shard w/o Strap)
Bullet Bills (Blue & Green variations)
Fry Guy Flamethrower Guns
Devo Gun
Goomba Head/Costume/Boots
Dino Egg
Mechanical Egg Container

Wow, I want the Police Jacket, a leather jacket-- with spikes! That's awesome.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

That flamethrower pic you posted looks legit. I actually think it might be one from a preproduction standpoint, before the final designs were made. As far as props go, I have a few. Off the top of my head, I have Annabel Jankel's director's chair back (not really a prop, I know), a Koopa newspaper, Goomba patch, police patch, and...Luigi's orange disco outfit.

Yeah I was kinda thinking it might have been a pre-prod version of the gun. I wish I had saved the larger pics of it when it was on eBay. If I remember correctly it didn't sell for very much either. Like around $100.00.

Those are some awesome props you've got! Especially since you have Luigi's disco costume. Are you going to eventually post pics of your props on the site? Love to see them!

I'm have a couple of screen used props, and am working on acquiring a few more hopefully in the near future. I'll be sure to send you some pics.

So I finally got around to posting these pics of the couple of screen used items I have...

This is the blue Bullet Bill cartridge Mario inserted into the chamber of the Stomper Boot before firing it at Koopa towards the end of the film

And aside from ever finding one of the original Stomper Boots, this is my holy grail from the film....

That's too cool man! :P I have no words. I wouldn't mind trying to make a replica Bullet Bill.

In the mid nineties Planet Hollywood in Sydney, Australia (long closed) had a life sized Goomba complete with costume and head. It was awesome. Wonder what happened to it? I'd love to see some detailed pictures of the costume.

Something I actually saw many times! I was about ten though so had to beg the folks to take me! I remember it being pretty big. Wish I got some photos back then.

So I haven't had time to take any professional photos yet, but I just got some new screen used props from the film and wanted to post a little teaser image until I can give them a proper reveal...

Enjoy!

Soooo...no luck with the teaser image, huh?

Okay, well I've had my little bit of fun...aaannnd I finally got some time to take some nicer pics of the new props!! While I am still at a complete loss for finding a Stomper Boot, these are still pretty cool and will have to hold me over in the meantime.

So I present to you....

Mario's Screen Used Tool Set!

Image

And you'll also notice that one of the tools is that infamous Spanner Wrench that Mario used to thwart the Goombas chasing them down the frozen pipe slide!

Image

Obviously these props have gotten some wear and tear on them over the years, but it's amazing they still exist. Apparently, right as filming began, Bob Hoskins was fitted with a complete set of real tools to carry throughout the film, however they were very heavy to lug around the whole time (throughout the entire film actually) so he requested a lighter set be made. These tools were cast out of resin from the metal tools and these were the ones he ended up carrying instead. And understandably so...these tools are one half to 3/4 lighter than real metal and wood tools.

What an interesting story, having the tools be lighter. I wonder if that's the reason Luigi lost all of his tools? The spanner wrench is definitely the coolest part.

Thats really cool! I would have never had thought that they didn't just use "regular" tools for the entire film unless used for stunts.

Yeah I never would have thought that they were resin either. But it also doesn't surprise me either. The budget for the props alone on that film was 1.5 million!!

You think it shows? I do...

Sure it shows. The amount of minute detail on things in the SMB movie is so ridiculous that a lot of people don't really realize it.

that's awesome!

Reminds me of a possible accident in the movie, don't think it would really be intentional even though Luigi did end up losing his tools and is taught a lesson by Mario about tools. Seems more like one of those accidental moments. Right after Mario and Luigi escape the police station hallway into the parking garage, watch and hear the clank of what looks to be a screwdriver fall out to the ground.

Probably just unintentional with them running with all those damn tools.

That is totally awesome, you own Mario's tools, even though nobody touches them. Hahaha. That bullet bill you have is by far the coolest, is there anyway you can cast it? That would be awesome to have a replica.

Yeah Zack I believe there were some other tools that Mario carries in the film - mainly just a few other screwdrivers I think. However, I don't believe those were ever cast in resin because the screwdrivers were the lightest tools out of all of them anyways. So I guess that's why there are no screwdrivers with this set.

And thanks for the compliment on the Bullet Bill...it really is a cool piece. I love it. It's the Bullet Bill and Bob-omb that are really obviously from SMB...the other props, while we know what they are, most people wouldn't recognize.

As for casting the Bullet Bill...it's not that I wouldn't do it, it's the fact that I don't even begin to have the slightest knowledge of casting props, etc. While I love cool looking replicas and real props and try to buy what I can afford, my interest lies more in collecting them for display rather than actually making them, so I digress that I've never learned how to cast anything. I truly love the props and art direction from these kind of films and have very fond memories so that's what's led me to want to just collect and preserve them. That may not make me the most popular individual on the replica props forums but I have a huge appreciation for the work people put into their replicas. In fact, I enjoy looking at and sometimes buying those replicas just because of the incredible work some people do and because they're able to make props that we'll never ever see licensed and replicated by an actual company like MR or Sideshow.

I'm sorry if that's not quite the answer you're looking for.

Y'know, I wish I could fit in that thing to model it. Judging from that, Leguizamo (then at least) is a pretty tiny dude. Or I'm extremely husky, lol.

oh yeah definitely that sounds about right. Noticed that and thought about how awkward and unfun it must've been to have to lug real tools around at first, with all the running too. Probably didn't help how Hoskins felt working on the movie though luckily he get some lighter ones.

Phlibbit, we surely need to see that, "Isn't it a little bit feminine?" "Yes I know it was my ex wife's lol hmm IMDB says John L is only 5' 8 so that doesn't help I'm sure :D I wonder what a good way to replicate the bullet bill would be otherwise.

Okay well since we're still about a week away from the reveal (i.e. when the new item gets delivered) and the teaser for the tool set was oh so popular, here's a teaser for the new item!

Guess away, but everyone is just going to have to wait a little longer...my lips are sealed. And after all, we wouldn't want an update overload this week, now would we?

Okay everyone, the wait is over...for both you AND me!

I ran home at lunch time and was able to be there when the Fed Ex guy showed up so just a heads up that by the time I unwrapped everything, I kinda had to get back to work so the pics below were taken very quickly. This item is pretty dusty and needs some cleaning so once I do that, I will post much better pics this weekend at some point.

I want to start off by just giving an enormous THANK YOU to two people who may or may not be members here (not sure if they are), but without their help, I never would have found out about this item, so if they read this, I want them to know that I am truly grateful for their help!

You guys have waited about a week for me to reveal this, but I have actually been waiting over 10 years to find this item and even longer since I laid eyes on one and had it ingrained in my mind that I wanted to get one. In 1993, I visited MGM Studios where they happened to have the hero, fully working Stomper Boots on display (I need to scan that pic in one day). Since that day, I have scoured the net and every other resource I could think of to find one of those boots, whether it be the hero pair (highly unlikely), one of the display case pair, or one of the running boots.

Well, today I finally received one of my holy grails of props!

One of the foam stunt boots used in the film!

Image

Image

From the initial pics I received, I thought this might be one of the display case boots, but after seeing it in person, I believe this is one of the actual boots worn by Bob Hoskins or John Leguizamo for the running scenes due to its wear and the velcro inside of the front of the boot to keep the ankle tabs closed together.

Even with the wear, the detail is really incredible on this boot and I assure you that I will be providing detailed pics of this as we never really get to see everything on film. For starters, every detail on the boot concept art Phlibbit has posted in the art section of the site is indeed on this boot. Now, for the first time, we will be able to see what the bottoms of the boots looked like and for those that have seen the artwork, yes the Thwomp logo is indeed on the underside of the boot!

So stay tuned for more pics this weekend!

Btw, marioblaster gets 10 Koopa coins for correctly guessing that the teaser image was of one of the boots! 8)
