I noticed that Daisy's mom (or at least I expect its her mom) looks very much like Daisy so much that they are probably the same person.

Probably cuz they're both the same actor. :P Not to be mean, just to clear it up.

Here are a couple of little things I've noticed lately, involving some cool signage/newspaper headlines:

Image

^Look at the sign behind Toad. "Danger--Electric Shock. GO FOR IT"

Image

^Most everyone has seen or remembers the "Koopa Can't Lose" newspaper because you can hear someone reading the headline in the film itself. However--look at the newspaper to the left. It's hard to see the entire headline within the same shot, but it reads "KOOPA FINGERS FUNGUS"

I just realized something that none of you guys noticed....

Dosent the scene where Koopa knocks down the goombas with one punch ("STUPID!" *smack!*) look similar to a common thing you can do in the game?

This is something I noticed watching the movie the other day, just an odd little thing. The guy controlling the devo machine is wearing a necklace consisting of a blue jewel.

Image

At first I thought it was a tie pin but then I noticed the little gold chain, so it's a necklace. This struck me as strange because this guy dresses very conservatively otherwise (kinky vinyl/latex gloves notwithstanding) so the necklace seems slightly out of place, especially worn over his tie like that.

So, does this have some significance? is it a reference to something? Or does it not signify anything at all? Either way it seems an odd thingg for that guy to wear considering both his job and the environment he works in.

No, that's just how they spell it in Dinohattan. Sort of like how they add "u" to everything in Canada and Europe.

That's very unusual. I never noticed it myself despite having watched the film an innumerable amount of times. It surely wasn't the choice of the actor (Kevin West), since such things are strictly controlled by the costumers and prop masters. I would probably say it's nothing more than an interesting costume-quirk, but do you or anyone else have an "in-universe" explanation?

^WOW. I seriously can't believe that I never noticed that necklace either. It's quite an odd choice, to be sure. You'd think it would have some sort of significance--but who knows. Most things in the film actually have some sort of reason for being there. Other things--like the Taz jacket--not so much.

Actually I even have a reason for the Taz jacket--one of the early scripts had a "gatekeeper" character that would monitor people leaving and arriving through the dimensional gateway. When Mario and Luigi first arrive, he complains that they didn't "bring him anything." So in theory, there's an actual reason for stuff like Taz jackets, Reebok shoes on Bob-Ombs, and Earth music in Dinohattan.

Not sure if this counts but this was the only Video game movie to use music from the actual game.

at the time it was. But Silent Hill used actual music from the games as well for the full score.

About all I can offer you is it's some kind of medal for outstanding military service.

Well, if you were King Koopa, you wouldn't want just any old Joe Schmoe to get his hands on your de-evolution machine, would you? No, you'd want someone whom you could trust not to use it against you. Someone who'd served you well before, when you first took down the old king. The blue thing inside it has to be pretty rare for such a small medal, and that's why it means something despite its size.

I thought I'd post screen-captures of numerous little things I noticed in the movie after Roareye did the same from the high-quality Njutafilms release.

Image

The band logo for The 'Saurs, which were meant to be played by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Image

A man with a Tazmanian devil jacket.

Image

A man in a 'Dyno Yawk' jacket, featuring the face of Koopa's de-evolved form.

Image

A cute 'lost pet' poster for what appears to be a Yoshi-like dinosaur.

Image

A cute T. rex figurine on Koopa's desk, as well as an egg paperweight.

Image

Awesome 'Pop Toads' decal artwork.

This is cool and all ,but this thread proves to me all the wasted references. Look at all of it, It's cool ,but what kid or adult is going to notice every detail unless you were to analyze the film like we are doing now.

I love the details, but this movie went way above the limits of detail and created it's own microverse on the set.
Just asking is the set still in existence or parts of it it's a huge ass set and there's no way it still isn't around.
Or atleast parts of it.

A cool thing I want to see is as many props and stuff from the movie we can recover and we redo the film or make a sequel. non-profit and fanmade.

These are what we loyal tvtropers call "Easter Eggs" and "Freeze Frame Bonuses".

They're only there for people like us to analyze. :P

It's ok my GOOMBA( goomba means friend oddly enough in Italian I think.)

I am not attacking you guys. I am looking at this at a movie stand point. The film is so fast paced that, say I were to watch this with fresh eyes I would maybe catch one or two of these things.

The movie wasted too much money on details that no one saw imho.

I love the things we see in these frames though because, it shows that the set designers made this world real.

Personally thinking about it this movie would of made a great TV show. It could of been several episodes long and all of the set areas could of been used.

Also it would of won awards for special effects.

So I think if this wasn't a movie but a show it would of been even better since time constraints would of been lifted.

No offence taken, but you have to realize that SMB was supposed to be longer than it appears. Suposedly there was originally a two hour and ten minute cut of the film which probably would've shown more of the city in all it's glory.

Besides Freeze Frame Bonuses aren't meant to be seen normally, they're only there for those who are willing to find them. Besides, the absolute detail in this movie is one of the reasons why we love it in the first place, if the city wouldn'tve had as much detail, there wouldn't be much to look at.

Hey Goomba, well mushroom to be exact.

I read the extended cut post. I apologize I was not aware there was even any extra film still in existence( I wasn't for sure if it was still around)

I would love to see it.

Oh and I remember the over head shots of koopa city/dinohatten.

Any shots of it? It reminded me of blade runner.

The Taxi cab had wiggler on it.
After mario get's the rock from bertha Boo's can be seen on the wall of the club.

I recently rewatched it it my brother.
I am older and taller, he's younger and stout.
So we really bonded over this. Also Clakakakakak
It was really fun to watch. There was way more stuff in this film then I remember as a kid.
I really Liked it, There are some parts that I wished could of been longer or better.
For example the koopa fight.

Oh and can anyone explain to me what the heck is that white stuff Koopa put's on his hands.
Is it wax? Also wtf reebok bob-omb?

Oh and I also watched scott pilgram vs the world earlier today.

Hah, this thread is so awesome! I lol'd so hard at the pig lady. HOW ON EARTH DID I NEVER EVEN NOTICE THAT, I'VE WATCHED THAT SCENE LIKE A MILLION TIMES

I don't have as good an eye for detail as you guys, but there were one or two things that I noticed. The first one is that, just on occasion, Koopa holds his hands in front of him like a T-Rex. Yay, foreshadowing!

The other was that, according to the screen on the console during Iggy and Spike's evolution scene, they apparently have really freaking weird teeny-tiny brains. I know that they're just reversing the thing from the demonstration earlier in the movie, but it was still pretty funny. XD

Hmmm, I seem to remember the part where he has his shoulders hunched a little, although I haven't really examined it with enough detail to say definitively.

Does the Swedish version have any extra scenes, or just little extra easter eggs photoshopped in, or what? I might check it out; I really like hearing how the different voice actors choose to interpret the characters, and all of a sudden I'm quite curious what Iggy and Spike sound like in Swedish.

I think the swedish version just has etter quality and a better aspect ratio so you can see more. Closest thing to a theatrical transfer we have BORK A BORK.

As Movieguy already said, the Swedish release is only better in terms of picture and sound quality. It's a much cleaner version than the American release, which came out back in 2003. We'll have an editorial discussing the differences up on the site at some point.

As far as we know, the only version of the film with a different cut is the Italian release, which cut out the final three scenes entirely while inserting a different (and much more fun) credits sequence.

Now that I have played Super Mario 64, I notice that the way the walls ripple before you jump through reminds me of the portal Mario and Luigi go through in the film to get to Dinohattan. There HAS to be a reference to the film there, because it's basically the same exact means of transportation.

I believe I remember hearing say both in the movie and in the eighties cartoon Super Mario Bros. Super Show 'I'll get those plumbers!' I was sitting here trying to think of some other things from the film that I'd heard or seen in other Mario products and that just popped into my head.

That they filmed it in a cement factory probably played some part, too, with everything outside the cement factory being desert.

The lack of vegetation was a huge theme of the parallel world. Why else did Koopa want to merge the dimensions and take over? We have resources.
