Little things you notice...

I couldn't help but notice a few things when I watched the past few times, not really errors but fun little things. Slow down or pause the movie when the car flies out of the tunnel, pause to see the awful Bob Hoskins "figure/doll" I guess it was a miniature.

When Goomba Toad gets set on fire, slow it down or pause to see what makes him catch fire, the liquid on his back. :D

when Koopa gets blown up by the Bob Omb as he falls back down, it's a bit awkward to see the human legs like that, ya think?

These were just some of my fun little observations.

Thought I'd update this with some screenshots...

Here's a few instances I caught of the flammable liquid used to ignite the flames.

The Dummy Bob Hoskins.

Never noticed this freaky PIG LADY! What were they thinking?

Misspelling of FINISHED lol

There are actually a lot of cool signs and stuff like that in the movie. I really wish we had an HD version so this stuff could be clearer.

I like the This building protected by Fry Guy Flamethrowers or whatever it says in the club. Also some of the other signs and things in the movie. I agree!

In the police station "No Food, No Drinks, No Blood, No Bathrooms"

I spotted earlier a hilarious moment after Bertha punches the hatcheck girl, when Leguizamo takes his tools back, he tosses the check-in tag on her unconscious body. LOL never noticed that before.

Really? LOL I'll have to look for that next time I watch the film.

Yep, funny! You're definitely right about all the signs and little references. The Rexx, Hammer Bros Tattoos, Wiggler cab, Roto Disc.

I like while Mario and Luigi are being roughed up and prodded around the police station, the "Welcome" sign lol classic.

Was it ever confirmed or denied if Whoopi Goldberg was the black lady in the prison cell? I remember everyone always saying it looked and sounded like her but never saw an official credit I don't think.

EDIT: Holy crap, I can't believe I've gone this long without seeing these. I read on a site the various references to the games and can't believe I never saw the projections on the wall of Valley of Bowser entrance that appears in the water in Super Mario World and the Boos a few minutes later. Subliminal advertise much? :D I guess I just never payed that close attention to see it.

If you look carefully at the wall in the Goomba barracks when Mario rescues the Brookyln girls, you can see an englarged version of the Goomba concept art. There is also a sign that says "Walk tall! Be proud! Become a Goomba."

I actually saw that and I was suprised to see it in the concept.

One question:

Is it just me, or does Bowser actually have a slight resemblance to Dennis Hopper? (For that matter, does Dennis Hopper bear a slight resemblance to Bowser?)

I was just playing Luigi's Mansion the other day, and it struck me when I got to the final boss!

There's a lot of things I've noticed throughout the movie (and a lot of things I've yet to discover, apparently), but one thing that came to mind almost instantly after reading this topic is the Boom-Boom bar scene just as Mario, Luigi, Iggy and Spike are walking in. There's an old man to the right that appears to be dressed rather similarly to how Mario appears in the games:

Image

Whether an intentional reference or not, I just thought that was kind of neat.

Take the scene where Koopa is talking about how for sixty-five million years they've been exiled to the wasteland, when in the streets below outside his window, you can see the guys who (apparently) work for Koopa, dressed in what will later become Mario and Luigi's red and green jumpsuits. It's like, his henchmen are slacking off when they should be doing whatever it is they do while Koopa's up there preaching the downfall of humanity. I don't know, but it keeps me up at night.

weird I never noticed that. I never saw before but earlier caught it paused. In the tall shot of Koopa Tower, the Bone fish that appears in Super Mario World.

I don't feel like going through the other threads, but I watched the movie the other day and saw scene when their toolebelts are cashed in, there is a sign that says somethigna bout Fry Guy. I'm 50% sure somebody brought this up, but I don't remember nor do I feel like looking through or reading the other threads.

MerrittTheFerret, I took a screenshot of what I think you're talking about (I used Hypercam, since I don't have anything else for taking pictures). Are you talking about the two guys on the bottom right of this picture?:

No it's not quite there, but close. I'll take a picture and see if I can show you...

Okay, here we go. Check it out, I've enlarged and highlighted the area where Koopa's henchmen in Mario and Luigi's uniforms are...

Image

...I definitely think that when they made this movie, their hearts were in the right place, but the directors had their heads so far up their own butts to allow the actors and editors to do their jobs at the fullest. But yeah, this shows that a lot of thought was put into the making of this movie, because it's ironic, that while Koopa preaches how his army will overthrow mankind, his henchmen, who will later have their clothes stolen by the two guys that ultimately stop Koopa, are slacking off in the streets below. That's just my thought.

I don't see it. Is there anyway to touch it up with photoshop or something. It's just a blur.

That was the best I could do, sorry, but if you pin-point that on a TV, it's much clearer.

This is exactly why I want a high-def release of the movie....it would be so great, so we could all analyze it to death :D

No, I don't think you are. I'm convinced that there was a lot of legitimate thought that went into the film's production. I fully expect to find lots of new little tidbits if it ever gets a HD release.

I just watched the real DVD on my 40" and saw what Merrit was talking about. That was clever if of them to have other people wearing the Bros jumpsuits.

I was thinking its funny how people complain about the police car chases and having nothing to do with Mario. Well around the time the movie was being made, it's probably not really connected, a little game where Mario drives was coming out. lol In addition to being a plumber, doctor, playing tennis and gold in his spare time, Mario also is a skilled driver. Plus he had already piloted vehicles in Super Mario Land.

One funny little thing I don't know if they intended. Dinohattan- dinosaurs. Manhattan- like Man? People? lol

Also keep in mind that the game "Super Mario World," opens with the words "Welcome to Dinosaur Land!"

Yeah! I always hated that too when people say Mario has nothing to do with dinosaurs.

Ah guess it all goes back to people not being able to accept a stylized darker re imagined version of Mario's world.

Out of all honestly, the closest SMB has to dinosaurs really IS JUST SMW. The only thing SMB 1-3+NSMB DS and NSMBWii has to dinosaurs is Bowser and his Koopalings who arent really dinosaurs, they are dragons. Yoshi is a dinosaur. I dunno, to me the real Mario Bros canon is Maro Bros arcade, SMB1-3+ Lost Levels, NEW SMB DS and NEW SMBWii. SMW2 Ruined everything IMO. It proved Marios not from NY and not a plumber.

But in a interview with Miyamoto, back in the day Mario was everything, any kind of job they could think of Mario was the man for the job, they were mostly game and watch games, like Mario's Cement Factory, Mario Bros, they were plumbers in the sewers of NY, but in GW, they made, cakes. In Donkey Kong some of you might know he was a carpenter. There I go in again in a useless rant.

I just can't help it, the movie was way to dark and out of tone for Mario. I thought Mario was all about happiness and clumbsiness what not. The movie tryed to hard to be like Jurassic Park and Total Recall. Ending poinbtless rant now.

I'm not sure if anybody noticed or said anything. But did you guys notice Iggy and Spikes desert vehicle looks like the running platform that makes Mario run up on walls in Mario World? I'd grab screens but I'm on my crappy netbook.

I couldn't help but notice the brothers "glug glug glug glug" almost sounds like the trademark power up sound of a Mushroom.

Now that's something... But, it's also close to the sound in Mario World when you shrink after being hit.

watch right as the Marios blast through the glass roof escaping, the rainbow colored glass there looks a lot like the "Lightmotive" logo from the beginning of the film. Maybe a subtle nod to themselves? Or if you're really reaching..Rainbow Road!!! ;)

Image

Not really a little thing, but did anyone else ever think it was weird when the brothers are escaping the police station on the pulleys and then they randomly drop off and are right by the Hallway exit? lol maybe it is just weird that way, like they couldn't figure out a way for them to "really" come down from where they were so it just drops them right by the door. Something missing? Probably not I guess just one of the parts of the movie that feels awkward.

EDIT: WOW. I was going through the beginning of the film in their apartment and a poster caught my eye. I could barely make out the word "Plumber" on it so googled it and found what it was. LOL It's hard to argue that they weren't really trying with all the set detail and stuff..that's pretty sweet.

I never noticed it myself, and was growing annoyed that the Mario wiki was saying it on Spike's article. They were also saying that Iggy's full name was "Iggysaurus"... So I pushed and demanded, and finally me and another user scoured the film and found it. It's very faint. He only knew about it because he has a subbed version of the film and took notes. (Iggysaurus turned out to be fan-made)
