I was searching on IMDB and came across this on the SMB page.

Apparently Harold Ramis was approached to direct the movie at first. He also loved the original game as well, but is very pleased that he turned it down. I think the movie would have been a whole new direction if the guy who directed Caddyshack was behind the camera.

ah cool I saw this yesterday and laughed :D I honestly don't wish directing this movie upon anyone. Curious to see what we might've ended up with though. How much could he have reshaped?

Well, the dude is Egon Spengler. I think he would've done a great job, honestly. At the very least, I can see him being able to make the movie more coherant and flow better.

Good point. Maybe a few more positive reviews? Might've gotten more people to see it even though the trailer probably scared some people off lol

Wow now I just found a video based on this intreview at yahoo. Check it,

amazing how they got correct 16x9 clips, yet we owners of the DVD just get 4:3 in 16:9.

That's a pretty cool video! Even if it was just what we had heard. Part of me likes Super Mario Bros for it's bomb status. It's a thing of infamy! :)
