Alan Silvestri's score, deliberate Italian reference?

This may seem a bit odd but I was humming the Police Car chase music one day and it occurred to me that it sounded very familiar.

Alright stick with me. Everyone is probably familiar with 'Funiculi Funicula' whether they know the name or not.

Anyway, "Funiculì, Funiculà" is a famous song written by Italian journalist Peppino Turco and set to music by Italian composer Luigi Denza in 1880.

Now the Luigi part is a weird coincidence lol but I wonder with the Mario Bros being Italian if Alan Silvestri worked that theme into parts of the movie. It's very brief but the similarities are really there IMO.
