Evolution

Postby Zack » Fri Jul 10, 2009 4:25 pm

I was wondering, do you guys think some people were turned off of the movie because of the whole evolution/monkey thing? I'm personally not very religious or have a strict system of beliefs so it wasn't an issue for me. I just know some people have different ideas of where it all came from.

Other than all the obvious reasons people would be scared away from this movie, I wonder if that left a bad impression with some people for that reason :D

Well, just as the case with movies like Harry Potter, you can't take it too seriously. Since the movie wasn't a huge box-office success, I don't think that the evolution issue had much to do with anything. Now, if the film turned out to be a smash hit, I think there would have been a lot more backlash on the evolution/de-evolution stuff.

I guess you're right! I know some people are sensitive or whatever about stuff like that. Sadly I think people more took the movie too seriously or took the fact that it wasn't a literal translation of the games too seriously. It's sort of one of those you have to use your imagination! :D

I betcha a lot of biologists boycotted the movie at first, and now use it for MST3K-like lessons on evolution.

I thought you meant Dragonball Evolution, since that movie is today's SMB movie, IMO. If I was younger, then yes it definetly would be. But yeah, I never thought of the evolution stuff until I was a bit older. It is odd, actually if this movie was made today, I guarentee it would have been nothing like Jurrasic Park meets Total Recall.

Nooo, we were talking about the David Duchovny/Orlando Jones non-starter of a vehicle called Evolution. One of the worst movies I've ever seen, which, come to think of it, did spawn a pretty good cartoon show; sort of a Real Ghostbusters for the 2000s. (And yes, it was miles better than EGB.) So I guess it's good for *something*.

I just gotta interject here, I think that regardless of people's personal beliefs, both creationists and evolutionists would probably agree that the way evolution is depicted in the film is downright ridiculous, therefor rendering the idea of the movie trying to push some sort of belief on anyone, ludicrous and inane. I think even Richard Dawkins, the biggest advocate for atheism and the world's most renown evolutionist would look at the movie and chuckle at the absurdity in the evolution subplot.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Why do I sometimes get the feeling that the script was indeed written by a bunch of monkeys sitting in a room, each one at a typewriter?

I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't believe in the theory of evolution. That being said, I also don't believe in fire flowers, koopa troopas or racoon tails that let you fly. So I had no real problem with the film in that regard. The whole point of good entertainment is that it brings you outside the realm of the mundane and into places you would never experience first hand, and the Super Mario Movie delivered.

No of course not. I'm studying to be a scientist at Mesa College and this includes evolution. Since I was a child, I've been I to animals and dinosaurs and when I heard of the word "evolve", I looked it up in the dictionary and read books on evolution. Evolution is the process of life changing and developing to adapt to changes.

Sorry but I'm an Atheist and don't follow what I believe to be "supernatural".
