Official Deleted Scenes Thread

Postby Phlibbit » Sat Dec 12, 2009 2:24 am

Okay guys. I've gotta say, I've really enjoyed the enthusiasm and life the forum has had for the past little bit. So, even though I'm always too busy for my own good, I thought I'd try to at least get something off the ground.

This will be the official thread for discussing and discovering any possible or potential deleted scenes in Super Mario Bros. I'll do my best to keep them all categorized here in the top thread (useful for when I get around to making the actual site page for it). If I'm slow to update it though, feel free to update it if you're an admin.

Potential Deleted Scenes

Koopa/Military Regalia

What do you guys think of this image?

Where could this be from? To me, it doesn't look like just "another promo shot" or anything like that. It looks like a frame or shot from an actual scene. I've never seen this photograph anywhere else in any SMB movie stuff either. You see VERY little of Koopa in the military regalia--when you do, it's a big deal. For example, there's this shot, and there's a quick glimpse of Koopa turning around quickly in the rain in one of the early trailers--likely from an extended "Daisy's mom" scene.

I actually think I noticed a photograph of Koopa on his desk when Iggy and Spike come in, it might be this one or a similar one of him in uniform.

Yeah, that's what came to mind to me. I don't believe he'd wear it in any other scene, and with his hands up like that it does seem like he's prowling.

Wow, what a good observation. If we only had Blu-Ray! I don't think they're the same image, but it's definitely one of Koopa in his military outfit. Perhaps there was a photoshoot and both pictures are from it? Or there's more to the story...

yeah more of a portrait in the desk photo of him...well I guess we can add a good chunk of known deleted scenes..

Scapelli Goons Extended. Mario and Luigi discover Mike and Doug bullying Pascal into business from them. Pascal offers the Mario Brothers a dinner to make it up to them. The dinner that night :D
Image
Trading card set, the movie's junior novel, the audio adaptation make reference to the scene.

Devo Technician into Slime Well known scene resulting in the green slime on the Devo Chamber floor. Also after "I'll kill that plumber" deleted after where Koopa says "Draw me a bath" which explains the mudbath.

Spike and Iggy Rap Spike and Iggy after a few drinks preach Koopa's overthrow at the Boom Boom Bar in the form of a terrible rap :D
Image

The trailer is chock full of deleted bits at least. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtMZKYnLg5c
Koopa yelling "GET ME THE ROCK" maybe an alternate take? Koopa hitting Iggy and Spike's heads together. Koopa saying "YES!" towards the end of the trailer, when he's sitting where he orders the pizza/figures out Lena has the rock. John Leguizamo saying "oh no, not again!" maybe unused dialogue from the car scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTeqO6OqAhY :07
Koopa walking, perhaps extended scene to the Devo Room?

From the concept art, it would appear so.

Watch 24:00 - 24:52 of the movie carefully, then pay attention to the next shot. While mostly likely not an actual full, "movie-changing" scene, the lack of any fungus in the streets below, as well as a completely different banister Mario and Luigi fall over, suggests at least a short scene or shot that was removed. The transition is just too sharp to be otherwise.

Now watch the final scenes of the movie. When Mario drops off from the Koopa Clown Car and Koopa follows him into the street, we cut to a scene of Lena struggling to insert the rock into the meteor. This is presumably happening at the same time, so it comes as a surprise to me that the cut back to Koopa and Mario reveals that they're now having a stand-off on a walk-way. There was no possible way they could have gotten up there in time, so I'm to assume there was an extended chase-sequence going on.

And what about the french kiss with Koopa and Lena?
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

Ahh that'd explain it. Maybe a bit of an extended "chase" scene between them.

There's one scene in one of those teasers with Koopa in the streets of Brooklyn, standing in the rain, he's in his military uniform, I'm guessing that was some cut footage that would explain why Daisy's mother is running frantically, but it does open another question: Why would Koopa go through to the other side alone? Unless there's even more cut footage, it doesn't explain why a high-profile political figure from the Mushroom Kingdom would go chasing after one woman, into another dimension all by his lonesome.

Unless, Koopa is just a grunt at this point in his political career, but that gives him less time to rise to power and turn the city into the hellish sprawl that we all know and love. So many questions here, I'm thinking someone needs to write a letter to Lightmotive, or better yet, Disney and ask for this footage. There's also a bit in another one of those videos with Koopa screaming something about the rock at Iggy and Spike, I don't believe it's in the final film.

I believe that's a complete alternate scene when Iggy and Spike come back through the portal with Daisy. There's some other footage and screenshots of it with the Koopa Cousins wearing completely different outfits.

Maybe that scene was based on the supposed "Koopa had a Crush on Peach" story in the games. Maybe they were lovers until Koopa lost his mind and wanted that rock.

After listened to the track "Suite from Super Mario Bros.", I noticed that the music from 9:19 to 9:45 doesn't apear on the film; looks like the filmmakers wanted to show us more of the mergin' of the dimentions. And btw, why Koopa shouts why, noooo!? like he has a special conection with the meteorite and the rock. Posibly the scene was very difficult to make it or just for don't make the movie too long

Perhaps he wanted to take care of her in person? We all know Koopa's a "you have failed me" kind of guy, so it's not entirely out of character for him to have done that.

I recently had dinner with a friend of mine, we were talking about the movie and he said that he'd seen it in theaters twice. Once in the regular theater, the second in a drive-in theater, and both times, they had the now-lost "de-evolution" sequence where Koopa obliterates some guy into goo. I just thought it was interesting that they'd put it in the theatrical version, yet remove it from the home video release. I've always said there exist several cuts of the Super Mario Bros movie, and this just further strengthens my theory.

it would've been amazing to see that on the big screen (or scary depending on how old you were). Maybe if some theatrical reels of the movie still exist they might have that scene on there?

If so, it would be cool if local independent movie theaters could do late-night screenings of the movie. Makes me wish the Bijoux were still open in my town >.<

Wow, that's awesome. I too have a friend that swears up and down to me that the extended devo scene was in the theaters when he saw it. Very interesting that this claim is quickly gaining some validity...

Okay, in my research for the movie I decided to visit the MEL (Makeup & Effects Laboratory) website, which worked in creating animatronics and costumes for the movie. Once there I found the following two photos from the Iggy and Spike "rap scene" that took place at the Boom Boom Bar. Both are not safe for work, which probably explains why the scene was cut.

Super Mario Bros. Platform Dancer outfit # 1

Super Mario Bros. Platform Dancer #2

(The Animatronics section features an additional two photos, one a promotional shot of Samantha Mathis with a Goomba and fan at a Japanese event and the other an in-film shot of two Goombas using Fry Guy Guns)

Nice find! More Iggy/Spike rap stuff is great. Now that dancer in the pic is actually in the film, but it's not as close-up as that.

I wonder what event that was where Mathis and the Goomba were at? Are they reading/holding the Japanese movie program? Ack, and also notice Bob Hoskins' head poking out there in the middle! And Leguizamo...doesn't really look like him, huh?

Yeah, I figure they thought they could save the entire scene by just cutting out the parts where she's center-stage and in front of the children. I actually found two more photos of these dancers (one alongside Koopa and the other a wide-shot of the Boom Boom Bar) on another site but I believe they're internal material rather than actual deleted scenes so I won't be posting them in this thread.

At first I thought it was the 93' summer CES but when I checked back it appears that was an American expo. However, the Goomba at CES also has a mini-dino under-arm, as seen in this scan.

^It is in fact "What!? Nooo!"

Also, I wanted to point out the awesome new clip posted this week with FOOTAGE of the Iggy and Spike rap:

Starting at :26, you can hear the lyrics if you know what you're listening to:

Koopa
The party Poopa
the Pooper Scooper
King Koopa

He says that we're inferior
It's time to be superior
There isn't an alterior
Motive to exterior

We can build a new foundation
Get rid of this abomination
Let's talk about our liberation
And start a new confederation

It's a crying shame
We're playing his game

According to the lyrics we have, that's nearly half of the whole rap right there. It seems like the rap would've started right after Mario retrieves the crystal, with Mario and Luigi trying to inconspicuously dance to it.

I've seen a few shots in the trailer that aren't in the movie:

-Goomba appearing around a round corridor
-Front view closeup of Mario & Luigi in the elevator
-There's a few quotes not heard in the final film such as Luigi saying, "Oh no not again!"
-Koopa yelling, "GET ME THE ROCK!!!"
-Koopa smacks Spike n' Iggy's head together

Hi everyone. Newbie on here, but am happy to see a fan community for this grossly underrated movie.

Anyway I think I may have accidentally found a deleted scene from the film while browsing Youtube today. Well its more like a small deleted piece of dialogue, but I can't recall it being in the movie and it is not mentioned on the deleted scenes page of smbmovie, so this thread seems to be the most best place to tell everyone about it and confirm rather or not its newly found deleted scene or not.

Check this clip out and go to the 9th minute or so.

The deleted piece of dialogue is from the bit where Mario and Luigi are in the cage talking to Toad in the police station. Luigi says "You told me to go after here" and Mario replies "Yeah for a date, not into another world".

Admittedly I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I don't think I'm imagining when I think this bit of dialogue was cut from the movie.

Holy crap, what a great find--and first post.

There's more than just that deleted scene/dialogue in there. Let me give the rundown:

First of all, start the clip at 8:15. It's a kid talking to the "3D talking Mario head," before Charles Martinet took over--so the voice is more of the Brooklyn type.

The first footage you see is of Mario arriving into the alternate dimension--and with what looks like some "in-progress" VFX work.

There's temp dialogue throughout the whole thing.

Bertha's "Come and get it, big boy" is seen with her actually saying the line--and with different dialogue than in the finished film.

And like you said, the best part: extended dialogue in the jail sequence; Luigi: "You told me to go after her..." Mario: "Yeah, for a date, not into another world."

^This dialogue is in some versions of the script. And as you can read in our interview with Mark Miller and Mike Harding, there's some extra footage here featuring Mark Miller's "lizard man."

Simply amazing find. I'll have to ask this guy if I can take out just this clip out and put on our YouTube channel.

Awesome find.

You're not imagining anything. That bit of dialogue is definitely not in the final cut of the movie. It is, however, in several early versions of the script and would have been part of a series of additional cut scenes involving the subplot of Luigi doubting his family pride and Mario resenting Luigi for getting him into this situation. Eventually they reconcile during the "Mario, I can fly!" scene.

This sequence would have gone on a little longer and most likely would have ended with Toad beginning another song. It is also when the cut Lizard Man appeared, in which Mark Miller's character would be seen in the cell to their left flicking cigarette ash at the two brothers.

This is a really big find, nametaken. What I find most awesome is that the first thing you did when you discovered it was to tell us here. :P

That's cool. I wasn't too sure if my mind was playing tricks with me but I thought there was something different to that clip I hadn't seen before.

This episode of Bad Influence would have been broadcast back in January 1993, right in the middle of SMB's post-production, so that probably explains the temp SFX and sound.

Ah, thanks for giving the date. That makes total sense.

For it being a few months before the film's release, I wonder if the show ran any other SMB movie clips?

We really, really need a director's cut of the film, particularly to clarify the whole alternate opening where Daisy and Luigi meet at the diner instead of on the street when he catches her when she slips on a puddle-- much more romantic.

And as for the opposite of a deleted scene, I want to see that stupid cartoon cut out of the beginning of the movie! I love Homer Simpson, but I don't love him that much that I need him to explain my movie to me. :?
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
