Lame IGN Article -- "10 Ways to Make a Good Mario Movie"

Postby Phlibbit » Wed Sep 15, 2010 3:13 pm

I shouldn't even be giving this kind of drivel the spotlight, but I just gotta:

http://movies.ign.com/articles/111/1119827p1.html

Thoughts/Comments:

Standard article by someone that doesn't know how films work and how to analyze them.

Dude complains about Luigi not having a moustache.

And wonders why Princess Daisy wasn't called Peach.

And he gives the Will Ferrell "Bewitched" movie as a "good" reference for a future film template.

Regarding Alan Silvestri's score: "It's a neat enough accompaniment, but the jaunty orchestral backing is far too grand and totally at odds with the cinematic crap-fest you're watching on screen."

^Huh?

Anyway, stuff like this just pisses me off.

I want to go to this guy's house, punch him in the face and throw a copy of Super Mario Bros. (movie of course!) at him. Not much but that's what I feel like.

He make some valid points, but renders them illegitimate by completely missing the point in other areas that are truly good. Still, I enjoy seeing a new article on the movie, even so long after it was released. People still talk about it. We can all feel better after reading the comments, though. Lots of supporters!

At least he mentionated the score of Alan Silvestri, something that nobody does (well, in my opinion, Silvestri made a very good work with the score)
I remember that we don't know the details of the recording of the score, of if Silvestri was inspired in the video games (we don't know if including the Super Mario Theme at the beginning was his idea) The ONLY thing we know is that the score was released along with the soundtrack of No Mercy in a bootleg edition.
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

its interesting how fans like to complain that the movie is nothing like the game, yet when a sequel is made that is exactly like the source material they complain even more!

Inspector Gadget 2 was a good example (yeah i know its based on a toon, but its the same kind of concept.)

The biggest flaw I see is that they didn't just come out and say that their version should be a cartoon.

Then again, after reading how the whole thing should be shot in an angle like the side-scrolling games, I get the feeling this was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, anyway. Practically satire.

Well, the article does say "[...] but something a little self-referential wouldn't go amiss. Go meta. Will Ferrell's Bewitched movie managed to be about the original source material, without pretending to be it. Okay, that's a bad example."

Bewitched is offered as an example of a self-referential, meta styling that would do a "Mario" movie justice while admitting it's a bad one. The Princess Bride would have been a better choice.

I see that they were trying to be amusing, but a lot of the "humor" is derived from poking fun at the movie with information we now know to be simple misconceptions. Some of which should be obvious to any Mario fun, such as why they opted for Daisy over Peach. (Hint: "Peach" didn't exist as a character until four years after the movie was written)

The real problem with this article is that it seems to have been written solely to bash the movie under the guise of a comparison piece. The suggestions for a "good" Mario movie would work for a cartoon, maybe, but not for a film. This is just another unqualified fan thinking they could have done it better.

^This. I couldn't have said it better myself.
