A place for those who "Trust the Fungus"

After watched the making of videos and readed lots of articles of the movie, I noticed that the soundtrack of Alan Silvestri is NEVER mentionaded, also, the score album is incomplete...

but... WHY

This differs per film, but a lot of times the interviews are done in advance. Lots of times the score is done during post-production and the production company might not have a composer nailed down until late in production. I'd imagine this could have been the case here.

And is the score album incomplete? I've actually been meaning to pour over it and see if there are actually any music pieces in that score album that aren't in the film.

I can't think of much of anything offhand that was missing from the score and yeah there's a LOT of unused stuff. I know the 6 second awesome elevator glug glug glug cue is missing. Sadly! I wanna say most everything else is there from what I've heard.

The score is DEFINITELY one of the awesome things about the movie and is sadly overlooked when most people look at the big "mess" that is the movie. I still always thought it was strange that no Mario tunes were implemented into the score. I love the themes created though and maybe the Mario stuff would have sounded too forced and worked against the tone the movie went for.

That's probably it right there. If there were more "explicit" Mario tunes, it would have likely took you out of the film's world too much and been even that much more of a surreal experience. Since the film is treated as a "prequel" to the games, it just doesn't make sense to blatantly put SMB game themes in there.

However, I do love all the little sound-effect references in there, like the sounds the Thwomp Stompers make, and the Starman sound when Daisy's in Devo 4.

I think you're right there, as far as actual Mario score feeling "forced" considering the tone of the actual movie, but I would have loved to get some more of that music in. Nintendo has always had brilliant composition, especially with their main franchises, and have always done a good job in remixing. Super Mario Bros. music in particular has always been remixed in amazing ways, so I have no doubt they could have found a good balance between the video game and film's tone. If only they had that kind of interest.

You posted just moments before me! Good thing, too, since your post does bring to mind another problem with the the possibility of more "explicit" Mario music: people complained about the short bit at the beginning of the movie, claiming it was "misleading". And to an extent those people are right. It does set the movie off with a very inappropriate tone. I imagine more music with such a theme would have only exacerbated that opinion.

Another interesting thing to note is that at this point, we're unsure as to when Silvestri was brought on board as the composer. Now, if he was talking to Rocky and Annabel about how to go about the score, I can see the reasoning why the game themes aren't in there. But, if he wasn't brought in until after Moron/Jankel left the project, I'd be interested to hear what he was told about approaching the score.

Only a few tracks are missing:

The "Super Koopa Cousins Theme" variations: when Spike and Iggy apear for first time, the capture of Daniella and when the knok the Mario bros. to capture Daisy

Luigi atemps to kiss Daisy

"Strap your belt on kid..." and the plumbing scene

The cue when Mario and Luigi are procesed in the police station

The escape from the devo chamber (not to be confused with the cue from the suite)

The cue when Iggy and Spike find the Marios in the desert

The classic elevator fanfare (glug glug glug glug!)

Yoshi entering Devo 4 (like the "Farewell" track but with another cue included)

"I'm flying Mario, I'm flying!!" (variation of the Marios' Theme)

The "Lena... she has the rock. ARREST HER!" scene

Koopa gets the rock

The victory celebration thowards the end

The king returning to his human form

But some tracks from other scenes where not included because they are similar to others also included (example: "Plumbers Reward" is the same as the cue when Koopa tells Lena that he cares about the future of they species)

Luckly, we got the lost cues of some tracks (the most of them in "Suite From Super Mario Bros.)


But, for me it's very, very annoying to find an incomplete music soundtrack.

Remember the Super Mario Bros. Theme from the Lightmotive/Allied Filmmakers logo (also included in the album).

Or that doesn't count?

The bar scene anyone? :p

I hope that someday a "complete score" album will be released
