Would Donkey Kong make a good SMB2 Villian?

Postby Guest » Fri Dec 24, 2010 10:41 pm

just had a thought i wanted to share with you guys.

Providing they were able to pull it off with the effects of the time, do you guys think DK would have been a good villain for the series? You know just to connect with the prequel game 'Donkey Kong." The movie would have had a brutal/dark style to it if he was in a sequel.

Could they have pulled it off with special effects at the time? Certainly. The makeup effects for the apes in the opening scenes of 2001: A Space Odyssey and for the evolved apes throughout the entirety of The Planet of the Apes were entirely convincing for their time, and both films were produced over twenty years before SMB. Don't forget that SMB also had its share of brilliant makeup effects, including Scapelli's de-evolution.

Would Donkey Kong have worked for a villain in SMB2? I'm not quite sure he would have. The entire first movie ran off the theme of dinosaurs, reptiles, and cold-bloodedness. A mammal villain just seems... off. It would completely skew away from what the first movie had established. I'm just not quite sure it would feel right.

Having said that, I have speculated that re-evolving Scapelli could have had technicalities and resulted in an "ape man" with a strong desire for revenge against the Mario Bros.

Sure, why not?

But I'd like to see Wart as the main antagonist, so maybe DK would be another of Wart's minions...

Daniella would have a much bigger role in the movie since she is clearly based on Pauline (Mario's girlfriend from DK)

Yeah, my idea was that a p-oed Scapelli would kidnap Daniella and haul her off to one of his (former) construction yards to get revenge against the Mario Bros. for ruining his business. It does fit rather well, but, again, isn't such a good thematic continuation.

I actually think it does. Because like you said the first movie was focused around dinosaurs as the bad guys, why not the sequel have mammals as the bad guys and more dinosuars as good guys besides toad, big bertha, yohsi and iggy and spike? I mean it would be perfect, kinda like a reverse setting.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

Having mammals as the villains in the sequel might make sense from the logical exploration of the thematic premise of the first movie, but how would they have pulled it off? We know there's no mammals (or at least no intelligent mammals) in the parallel world, so the plot would have to take place in our world. Where's the adventure in that? All the Thwomp Stompers and dino-humans and Goombas and all the things that make the movie what it is are in the parallel world. Why take focus away from it? It simply makes sense to explore what was already set up rather than deviating from it, at least so soon into the game.
