Attention Canadians! SMB Airs Tonight!

Postby LBD_Nytetrayn » Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:13 pm

Full story is here, but to be blunt: It's on Family.ca this Sunday at 9pm.

In addition, it's cited as having a run time of 91 minutes, versus the DVD's 104 minutes, which suggests that despite being commercial free (I think, I know their shows are), it sounds like something(s) may have been cut.

Edit: Well, it looks like Family decided to change the schedule, and now it's supposed to be next Sunday, the 16th, at 9pm. Tonight, we get Herbie: Fully Loaded instead. :P

Edit 2: No, my bad. It was always the 16th... I'm apparently just calendar-challenged, and no one ever told me. :P

The movie should get a lot of new fans through this. It aired on the Family Channel last weekend (not sure which country/region) and Twitter was receiving tweets about it throughout the entire day from hundreds of people. It was a great opportunity to speak with people that had never seen or even heard of it before.

Hope you can catch it. I'm curious what might have been cut and how that affects the narrative, especially since one of the movie's chief criticisms was how slow the pace could be at times. (Perhaps record it for comparison?)

What exactly is there to cut from the movie? Maybe Koopa's lizard tongue since it looks like a common sexual gesture to girls.

It has to be said, congratulations to the Super Mario Bros. fans in Canada. As well as for the general enjoyment, I assume some (if not all) of you will be watching it as a belated tribute to Dennis Hopper? And is anyone going to buy any chocolate coins (in gold foil, of course), brick chocolate, coconut and/or marshmallow mushrooms etc. to eat while you watch it?

I hope it will come on TV here in England again, in fact immediately before I found out about the DVD release I was thinking "Sure I have the video but it would be nice if Super Mario Bros. came on TV again." But then I found out about the DVD release, when I spotted the DVD at a now-defunct store. Right away I bought two copies, one for myself and the other for my mum as a Mother's Day gift since she too adores the movie - and come Mother's Day, oh her face lit up when she opened my present and saw the DVD!

Oh, it was on last weekend, too? Wish I'd known, in case it was up here...

I'd record it, but sadly, I lack the equipment to do so.

Yes, it played the first weekend of 2011. Phlibbit and I then resolved that this was going to be a good year. :D

Ah. That's too bad about lacking any equipment to record the showing. Hope you can catch it regardless and let us know what was cut out anyways.

I think they're going to cut any shots of the Twin Towers.

I don't see why a Canadian airing of the movie would cut out the Twin Towers shot, especially since American networks have been depicting the Towers in film broadcasts without problem for the last few years. Besides, a one-second shot hardly constitutes a 13-minute runtime decrease.

Oh nice, I haven't seen one of those tins before! Can you please take a photo of it? :P

As for censor cuts... yes I guess I can see why the part when Koopa sticks his tongue out may probably be cut. I personally don't find it too dirty, though.

Well theres more than one shot of the Twin Towers in the movie, but you're right. The shots are still very short. What could they be cutting to make it so short? End Credits maybe? Opening? 13 minutes randomly selected? Who knows...

Boom.

Note that the candy actually comes in a little plastic bag within the block.

Oh wow, awesome! I hope they come out here in England! Perhaps I can talk to Roy (the manager at my local GameStation - and yes you can guess which of Bowser's children is his favourite  ) and see if he can get hold of any of them?

I hope they don't censor the Goomba elevator scene. It's my favourite part in the movie, omg it is just so adorable :D

As an aside, I tried to spread the good news through dropping a tip/link to my article to GoNintendo, but I guess this is one of those times where RMC just wasn't interested, or something.

I tell you, given how much of pretty much EVERYTHING Nintendo (and even some stuff only barely related) he posts, it's always a punch in the gut to not have something posted there.

So, guess what? Family isn't showing the movie tonight, after all.

No, instead, they moved it to next week. :P

Yeah, once it got to Sunday I was curious about it not having aired yet. Sunday doesn't seem like the kind of day they would slot it into.

In fairness, I had the date right. I just have no idea how many days there are in a week.

Tonight!

And if you get the east and west versions of Family, then you have two chances to see it, three hours apart.

EDIT: Well, I just finished watching, and I don't think anything was cut-- not even any of the Two Towers scenes. The part where Daisy joins the missing girls at first seemed to cut off abruptly, but I think it might have been like that to begin with.

As it turns out, the movie ran over it's projected time, so I guess someone at Family just messed up.

They probably did just mess up since they already edited out pretty much anything extraneous to get the runtime down for theatrical release. I really couldn't see anything further being cut so I'm not very surprising.

Thanks for keeping us following this, LBD. We certainly had our hands full on Twitter tonight keeping up with all the tweeting fans, both new and old. Very few haters, surprisingly. :)

My pleasure, and glad to hear there are fans taking a shine to the Twitter. I'd love to see what some of them had to say.

Just like last time, it seems a lot of people weren't even aware it existed. Most were fascinated by the mere idea of such a thing ever being produced, so it was a good way to reel in new fans. Another funny thing is that a lot of girls seems to really like the movie while it's the gamer guys that bash it. :P

Interestingly, from my knowledge, that was the first time it aired in Canada since about 2006 or 2007.

It actually aired two weekends before at the very start of January. Perhaps there'll even be future airings. :P

And I hope we British will get a turn soon, because we haven't had it aired for a few years - quite a few of Dennis Hopper's movies have been on in recent months, so why not SMB? And maybe a few other game movies as well would be nice, like Street Fighter. Heck, good ol' Mortal Kombat was on last week!
