An interesting Super Mario Bros. Reboot Idea

So I was thinking. And you know that this is a dangerous passtime. Anyway I got to thinking and as thinking goes, it hit me. The best person to do a wacky live-action Super Mario Bros. Movie!! TIM BURTON! I don't know if it's been mentioned before but ah well, no harm done. But just think about it. Look at what he did for Alice in Wonderland, right? I'm sure he could easily come up with a wacky, yet apropriate vision for the Mushroom Kingdom.

I didn't care for Burton's Alice in Wonderland. It looked nice, if you're into that kind of thing, but he didn't really capture the nonsensical point of the original novels. Sure, there's a lot less to screw up with 'Super Mario,' but I still think that he wouldn't be able to capture the spirit of the games in the way that it deserves.

Burton's losing his touch. His best stuff is pretty much everything up to Nightmare Before Christmas, and then he kind of peters out--although I did enjoy Mars Attacks and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Alice, I have to admit, was kind of "meh."

I say, let him executive-produce a reboot, but take whatever advice he may offer with a grain of salt. Just so long as I get to pull out my Long John Baldry impersonation for Bowser...

I'm a HUGE Tim Burton fan. Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood...amazing, amazing films.

But when you're talking about doing a SMB reboot, I immediately think of the majority of the criticisms placed upon the original film--style and no substance. While visuals are very important, the story cannot be forgotten. And in that regard, Burton isn't the right guy for the job--especially if you take his recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland into consideration.

Tim Burton would be good for:
-Re-creating the darker atmosphere the original film had
-Good character traits & development
-Claymation (It would look cool, but I'd rather have the visual style of the '93 movie)
-Musical score
-Marketing (His other films had great marketing, Mario Bros. would be harder, but not impossible)

Tim Burton would be bad for:
-Storyline (He focuses on visuals more nowadays instead of a well-structured plot)
- Horror Content (His other films have a definable "spooky" atmosphere to them, I'd worry that he would do the same to Mario. It worked for Batman, but Mario is a whole other thing)
-Casting (Not too sure about this one..)
-3D (It's a gimmick, and somethings could be better off without 3D.)

I personally think Edgar Wright would be the best man for a Super Mario Bros. reboot, he truly understands the "video-game movie" genre better than anyone else. He would make a great live-action Mario movie without straying too far off the original material. His style of directing is just a visual eye-candy while having great writing and gags, which is hard to do nowadays since most movies either have great visuals and bad writing. Based off the game or 1993 movie, he'd just do it right, make a great Mario game film, or take on and perfect the 1993 Mario movie.
