Super Mario Bros. HV Re-Release: My Thoughts

Postby AngeloThomas » Wed Jun 15, 2011 7:55 pm

This is a thread for fans to list different special features, etc. they'd like to see for a future home video re-release of the movie.
Here's what I'd like for a 20th+ anniversary edition...
- Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack (Restored Picture Clarity!)
- Behind the Scenes featurette
- Original TV Spots/Theatrical Trailer
- Image Gallery (Concept Art, Storyboards, on-set photos, design)
- Deleted Scenes/Outtakes (we know they exist!)
- five 4 x 6 glossy stills from the restored version of the film included in a limited edition

Not only a home video re-release, but...
- Showing of the film on Disney Channel the weekend of the release
- Release movie novelization through Disney Press (I'm not sure if they ever made one. If they did, Disney Press should publish it at the time of the re-release)
- Ever been to stores like FYE and seen Disney posters? Well, it would be profitable for Disney to put out the original Super Mario Bros. poster at the time of the re-release
- A minor press/advertising campaign
ex:
*a GameInformer <GameStop magazine> issue that has the movie poster on the front of it and an article about Disney's re-release
*TV Commercials on Disney Channel
*Online ads
*Have the restored version of the film exclusively stream FREE on Netflix (for 24 hours only) an entire week before the HV release (this will sort of begin the countdown for the release)

ALL of these things would result in alot of ca$h for Disney. And they like that, don't they? Why would this result in cash, you ask? Simple. Most kids today were not alive in 1993, and I bet most of them haven't seen the movie, either. Nintendo's Mario franchise is pretty popular with kids these days. Heck, everytime I go to Walmart I see SOMETHING Mario related, whether that's a Wii game or an action figure set or even a T-Shirt. Mario has become a recognized brand in the eye of the public, and how brilliant would it be for Disney to release the film and market it to this audience? $$$$.

I agree with each of your requested re-release special features. Ideally, our ultimate goal would be to receive the best picture and sound quality possible through a restoration, but since doing that would perhaps be too much out of Disney's interest for the property we would be satisfied with at least having the behind the scenes featurette and theatrical trailer on the release.

We know that deleted scenes are out there, many of which would drastically alter the tone of the film. While we would prefer an outright re-cut of the film to get the best possible version out there, that would also perhaps be far outside the interests of Disney. Having the deleted scenes alongside the movie at all would be a fair consolation.

There actually was a novelization for the movie released at the time. It's proven to be quite a popular item for us fans.

Coverage from the big gaming magazines would be an enormous push in getting exposure to out to millions of gamers worldwide. It's also a good medium for those publications to revisit whatever coverage they may have given the film back in 1993 and following.

However, online ads are the big contender. The movie, like it or not, has a huge online presence. Our site especially has been getting hundreds of thousands of hits a month simply because of exposure granted through Kotaku, AICN and other popular gaming/film news sites. Marketing was a huge problem for the movie during the time leading up to the film's release. With the advent of the Internet Disney no longer has to worry about that; they have a built-in system of advertising that can generate exposure for free.

A special edition is unlikely. We'll be lucky enough if Mill Creek Entertainment gets a chance to put it out, since they've recently been putting out Hollywood Pictures films on Blu-ray.
