The Muppets Should Host the 2012 Oscars

I'm not usually a fan of those "let's make something crazy happen" online campaigns, but this one seems like it could actually be a little fun if it turned out.

For a little background, director Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand, Rush Hour 3 and Tower Heist) was set to direct the show with Eddie Murphy as host. After some controversial statements made on the Howard Stern show, Ratner is out as well as Murphy.

So, this campaign started to get the Muppets (who have a new film coming out later this year and a string of popular parody trailers) to host the show. So far their Facebook page has nearly 30,000 Likes while their Twitter page has nearly 11,000 Followers.

Clearly, the movement has support. So, I recommend anyone that has a Facebook or Twitter account to do what you can to spread the word! Who knows, maybe we can make it happen? :P

I think this sudden positive energy will decrease when the movie comes out. I mean don't get me wrong, I was a fan of the original muppet movies, but lately, movies based on nostalgic childhood moments have sucked, escpecially the Smurfs movie, I haven't seen it but I already knew it was suck.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

I'm sure that The Smurfs did suck, but it at least had Neil Patrick Harris and I'm pretty sure it had the top box office earnings for its time.

Unlike most in the industry today, Jason Segel loves the Muppets. I'm sure with him writing, producing and acting in the film it'll at least be a nostalgic look back at what made the Muppets fun. Surely that's enough to set it apart from these other "nostalgia remakes."

True, however M. Night Shamalan also said he was a fan of Avatar the Last Airbender and we all know what a great adaption that was. Besides, Jim Henson is dead. And without him, it won't matter how hard the moviemakers try (and they probably wont) The new Muppets movie won't even hold a candle to the old movies.

I'd give the new Muppets movie a chance if I were you. It really seems to have a passion behind it that a lot of other licensed property adaptations just don't have. It's kind of a reboot and it seems to bring the characters back to their roots (the "real-world" stories like the original Muppet films) as opposed to story adaptations like Muppet Christmas Carol or Wizard of Oz, etc.

The difference there is that everything Shyamalan said to suggest his love of Avatar only showed his ignorance of what it was actually about. Not only that, but he had never been involved in anything remotely close to the highly animated, upbeat and emotionally real world of the cartoon show. Segel, in contrast, is known for his place in modern visual comedy and has worked with puppets many times before.

Henson may be dead, but so are the creators of many popular and well-loved franchises. It doesn't mean that someone else can't love it and revitalize it. Many franchises have, time and again. The Muppets can easily find their place in the digital age.

Eh, what the heck. I'll give it a chance. Though I'm still a little skeptical about it. At least we have those youtube videos of them. :P

Or perhaps he made it badly on purpose so as not to replace the animated series?

Whatever the case, I don't think this will happen with the Muppets movie. From what I hear of it, its plot is bare-bones enough (they have to put on a show in order to save their theater) to work. Sometimes, all you need is a beginning, an ending, and 100 gags. And the Muppets are funny enough to pull that off.

Well, it looks like I underestimated this movie. It turns out Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 97% out of 100. Also many critics have given it good reviews. I should check it out.

I think Jim Henson said it best when he said: "Hey, does anyone have any Tylenol? I think I'm getting a cold..."
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
